Abingdon 63, Virginia High 54

Despite a late comeback attempt, Virginia High was unable to overcome an eight-point first quarter deficit in a setback to Abingdon.

Trailing by nine points entering the fourth quarter, the Bearcats seemed to gain some momentum after Abingdon’s Zeren Belcher was called for his third foul of the game, and then called for a technical foul after spiking the ball in frustration at the call. Virginia High managed to close the gap to just three points, but the Bearcats were unable to capitalize on several shots that came up short of the rim. Abingdon was able to sink several key free throws in order to preserve its lead down the stretch.

“We just didn’t play very well. I thought we had some golden opportunities,” said VHS coach Wayne Rasnick. “It appeared like no one really wanted it there for a while, then of course Abingdon seized control there and put it away.”

Jordan Dixon led the Bearcats (2-3) with a game-high 26 points, shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line while making all five of the team’s 3-pointers. Dixon scored 11 points in the fourth quarter alone during the Bearcats’ comeback attempt, including shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Abingdon (3-2) was led in scoring by Trent Cox, who finished with 17 points and made two of the team’s five 3-pointers. Cade Hungate scored 11 points in the win, while Jake O’Quinn and River Carter accounted for 10 points each.

“The major positive is that we didn’t quit,” Rasnick said. “[We] just need to bounce back and do what we do and we need to make our free throws.”
