BOYS HOOPS: Trey-capped rally helps Fort down Draft

FORT DEFIANCE — Fort Defiance’s only 3-pointer of the game came at the most opportune time.

Zach Eppard banked in a 3-pointer from the right wing in the closing seconds to give the Indians a one-point lead and Fort escaped with a 74-72 victory Thursday night over Stuarts Draft.

Eppard’s shot capped a furious rally in the final two minutes as the Indians wiped out an eight-point deficit.

Draft led 70-62 when Nick Lasam knocked down a 3-pointer with just more than two minutes left o play.

Josh Whelan, who scored 12 points in the final quarter, worked inside for a bucket to hoop to pull Fort to within 70-64, with 1:58 left.

A layup by Fort’s Jacob Jones and two free throws by Whelan made it a two-point game with 1:18 left. Following a Draft turnover, Jones drove the paint for a layup to tie the score at 70-70 with 55 seconds remaining in the game.

Draft’s Kasey Branch went to the foul line for two free throws, but missed both with Fort controlling the rebound. The Indians, however turned the ball over in the backcourt and Lasam drove to the hole for a layup to out the Cougars up 72-70 with 29 seconds left.

Fort worked the ball into the frontcourt and Eppard put up long-range jumper that kissed off the glass with 10 seconds left for a 73-72 Indians lead.

The Cougars worked the ball into the frontcourt and in a battle for a loose ball in the corner, the Cougars were whistled for a technical foul with less than a second left on the clock. Whelan hit 1-of-2 free throws for the final margin of victory.

Jones led the Indians with 27 points, scoring most of his points on layups against the trapping Draft defense. Whelan scored 23 points and Eppard finished with 12.

Colin Williams hit six 3-pointesr and led the Draft with 23 points. Tyler Goodwin also reached double figures with 10 points.

Fort also won a close junior varsity game 56-51. James Riddel and Mason Angel scored 13 points each for the Indians while Ryan Riley had 14 for the Cougars.
