Lee opens season with win on the road

BUFFALO GAP - Terrell Mickens wasn't sure exactly what he'd see from his basketball team Friday night, but one thing he was sure of.
"I knew we were going to get a lot of effort," the Robert E. Lee coach said. "It's about eight or nine of our guys' first varsity experience."
Lee High is coming off a season where it lost in the state championship game, but most of the players that led that team have graduated. This is a mostly new Lee High team, and on Friday night they got things started on a good note, beating Buffalo Gap 73-52 in Lee's season opener.
"We've got to get better on defense," Mickens said. "That's the main thing. We've got a lot of young guys who like to gamble. They just need to trust each other more."
Javon Battle and Darrion Simms both had 15 points to lead the Leemen, while Ethan Painter and Ethan Vest finished with 11 each in the win.
For Gap, the game ended a four-game unbeaten streak to start the season. They were hanging with Lee for most of the first half. It was an eight-point game before Painter drilled a 3 right before the buzzer to end the first half, sending Lee into the locker room up 11.
But the Bison trimmed that lead to seven early in the third before a bucket by Battle started an 8-0 run that put the Leemen in control. Tanner Rivenburg, who finished with 10 points, hit a 3 for Gap to stop the Lee run, but the Bison could never get their deficit into single digits again.
It didn't help that Gap made just 20 of 38 free-throw attempts.
"At halftime I told the guys you're going to find yourself shooting 20 free throws in the second half," Buffalo Gap coach Chad Ward said. "Lee's very aggressive and they're going to come and foul you. So if we handle the pressure and go to the rack, we should find ourselves at the free throw line."
Lee led by 12 after three quarters and stretched that to 17 on a driving layup by Vest and a three-point play by Battle. Lee built its lead to 25 in the fourth quarter.
Mickens said he would have rather not waited until Dec. 7 to play his first game. With a young team, they need game experience, so taking the court two weeks ago would have been better.
"But you play the cards you're dealt," he said. "We're not complaining. We're just glad to be playing."
Lee opens at home Tuesday against Stonewall Jackson.
Weston Smith finished with 15 to lead the Bison, while Cameron Lyle added 13 in the loss.
Things don't get easier for Gap, which travels to East Rockingham Monday for the Eagles season-opener. Ward is looking forward to the challenge.
"We got our four wins against the first four teams we faced," he said. "Let's go. Lee and East Rock. Let's see what we're made of and that will give us a good idea of what we need to fix and work on."
