Jarvis Vaughan led the Leemen with 15 points as he eclipsed 1000 total career points in Lee's win over Stonewall Jackson

Halftime - Lee 41 SJ 2
Wow. Just checking out the game result and I can't ever remember a team playing Lee that only had 2 points at halftime. Do you pizzzza?

I looked at the Shenandoah District sports site and Stonewall Jackson's schedule and results for this season. The closest to only 26 for a game was a loss to Wilson 52-32.

SJ's record is 6-11, and they beat Strasburg twice this season by 19 and 17. Strasburg last night gave Central-Woodstock all they wanted before losing. SJ also has beaten Gap and Luray by 9 each. So they are not a awful, by far the worst in the district type team.

Either Lee just was unbelievable in the first half defensively, or SJ couldn't throw it in the the ocean. Maybe a combination of both?

Maybe back in the "old days" - I'd have to check, but probably some type of 'modern day' record.
(I'll have to check and get back to you)

Like I've said before, teams seem so inconsistent this season - sometimes it's hard to explain some of these results.

I'm just glad that Lee is getting a lot of time for all the players right now.

Yea. Did you see Spotswood's last two games as an example? Lost to a Sherando team Thursday they probably should have beat. Then Friday the Blazers defeat one of the best 4A teams Handley.

I know Spotswood has been playing without senior 6'9 Ouderkirk, which can explain some of it. I hope he doesn't come back until after they play Lee next week. lol. Any word on when he is to be back?

Spotswood is still a very solid team - and not having Ouderkirk has to hurt their team chemistry - and learning to play without him is quite an adjustment (remember Vaughan being out for just that one game - how much it affected Lee - only loss of the season).

I have no clue on his return date - perhaps someone on here (or 3A board) might have a better answer than me.

Personally, I'd prefer the Blazers to be at full strength when they play Lee - will be a good test/challenge for the Leemen, and will prepare them even more for post-season.

Unfortunately, there's not too many more challenges on Lee's schedule the remainder of the regular season.

STAUNTON — Robert E. Lee’s basketball fraternity of career 1,000-point icons welcomed its newest member.

Jarvis Vaughan walked through the fabled doors with his first basket Saturday afternoon, and the Leemen made it a day of celebration by routing the Stonewall Jackson Generals 70-26 in a Shenandoah District boys’ basketball mismatch at the Paul Hatcher gym.

Vaughan became the second Lee player in as many years to gain admission to the elite club, joining former teammate Darius George, who achieved the milestone last season.

“I always dreamed of achieving this goal,” Vaughan said. “It is a real big deal to me to have my name alongside all the other Lee greats. Not many high school players reach this goal. I have been blessed at Lee.”

But Vaughan, who finished with a game-high 15 points, was a bit mad at himself on how he reached the goal, which came on an elbow jumper at the 5:25 mark of the first quarter.

“I wanted it to be a dunk,” he smiled. “But I still achieved it no matter how it came.”

Lee acting head coach Terrell Mickens was happy to see his star hit the milestone.

“It’s a great honor to reach,” Mickens said. “I love having Jarvis around. That is back-to-back years we had 1,000-point scorers with Darius and Jarvis. We were lucky to have those two playing together.”

As for the game, well, it wasn’t a game at all in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Stonewall scored only two first-half points, which included going scoreless in the second quarter, and trailed 41-2 at halftime.

Lee’s second straight dominating victory put the finishing touches on a perfect trifecta where the Leemen won three games in three days.

“That was a tough stretch,” Mickens said. “But we came out again and handled business from the start. It’s good to face challenges as they will make us stronger going forward.”

The first-place Leemen, who were on the court again less than 17 hours after thumping Wilson Memorial, scored the first 19 points against the overmatched Generals. Lee (13-1, 10-1) hit the Green Hornets with a 10-0 blitz to open Friday’s showdown.

Vaughan’s milestone jumper made the score 8-0, while Everett Castle regained his first-quarter scoring form with nine points, including a three-point play, during the 19-0 assault. Castle ended with 11 points, all coming in the first half.

Stonewall (6-11, 2-9) finally removed the zero on the scoreboard when Samuel Brinkley hit a jumper with 1:56 left in the quarter. The ‘2’ didn’t change again until nearly two minutes into the third period by which time Lee was ahead 44-2.

The Generals reached double figures at 10 on Brendan Hoover’s 3-pointer at the 5:10 mark. If there was a positive for Stonewall, they did outscore the Lee reserves 14-12 in the final quarter.

“I think the kids were a bit in awe coming into this place,” said first-year Stonewall head coach Jim Sanders, who had spent the last several seasons coaching at Luray. “This was my first time coaching in here. I had watched games, but never from the sideline. It was an experience to say the least.

“Lee looks ready to make another run,” he said. “We are starting from scratch and trying to rebuild the program. That was two teams on different ends of the spectrum.”

The teams still have to play again Jan. 31 in Quicksburg in another makeup game like Saturday’s.

The Leemen have another three-game week awaiting them. They host Luray and Waynesboro on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Then Lee tangles with old Valley District nemesis Spotswood on Friday at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Classic at Rockbridge County High School.

Friday’s game against the Trailblazers is the 8:45 p.m. nightcap to a three-game slate on the first day. Prior to the Lee-Spotswood matchup at 7:15 p.m., unbeaten powerhouse and nationally no. 2-ranked Oak Hill Academy makes its first appearance at the event. Oak Hill features three ESPN Top 100 recruits in Kentucky signee Keldon Johnson, Kansas signee David McCormack and Oregon signee Will Richardson. The Warriors play St. James School from Hagerstown, Maryland.

The first game Friday at 5:45 p.m. pits Broadway against Greenfield School from Wilson, North Carolina, which touts North Carolina signee Coby White.

Six more games are scheduled for Saturday, including contest highlighting Stuarts Draft and Riverheads. The high-scoring Cougars start the day at 11 a.m. against Floyd County, while the Gladiators play Parry McCluer at 2 p.m.

The Lee jayvees also had an easy 90-32 romp. Five Leemen scored double-digits with Carmelo Pacheco-Whitelow’s 15 leading the parade. Nicholas Jones added 12, Mason Luck 11, while Ethan Painter and Javon Battle both tallied 10.

Lee's future looks promising if you're paying any kind of attention to the JV team - they are looking mighty impressive.

Coach Edwards is one heck of a coach. The Blazers will give Lee all they want without Ouderkirk. When Spotswood plays well they can possibility beat all the 2A top teams. Vaughan needs to have a really good game for Lee to finally end the long losing streak against the Blazers.

If Ouderkirk can get back soon, and play a few games before the postseason, then maybe Spotswood can make a good run in 3A. Northside still might have too much for them. That being said, Northside might be just too much for any team in 3A.

Yes. Unbeaten with most all of the games being big blowouts. The LeeJV, like the varsity is very deep with a handful of players who can lead them in scoring in any given game.

I had not heard that the Rock the Ribbon had expanded to a two-day event. Interesting.

As for the Stonewall game at Lee, considering how upset their coach got in the Riverheads game Friday night, he must have been beside himself today.
