Good point pizzzzza, Lee will have play better in the 3rd Q in the postseason. I doubt if Lee will see a team as good as Spotswood in the 2A playoffs, yes even Martinsville for the Bulldog fans here on Va Preps, but still many playoff games are/can be won in the 3rd Q. Under P.Hatcher, Lee teams regularly won the 3rd, that's a big reason Lee use to be a powerhouse program. I will say it again, defense will be the key, getting some easy buckets helps win the 3rd Q.

I believe Martinsville could compete with Spotswood if they played. The only thing the Dawgs lack is size.

PENN LAIRD - Spotswood's boys basketball team caught fire in the third period against Robert E. Lee, rolling to big 64-45 win over the Leemen in Valley District boys' basketball action Tuesday night.

The district's top two teams battled evenly for the first half before the Trailblazers (16-4, 10-0 Valley) took control after the break. The win, Spotswood's sixth straight, wrapped up the regular-season district title.

Center Daniel Oudenkirk, a 6-foot-9 junior, led the Blazers with a game-high 20 points for Spotswood.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half. Lee senior Darius George had seven points in the first quarter to help the Leemen (15-4, 7-3) take a 14-12 lead.

In the second period, Oudenkirk had nine points and Spotswood scored the last six points of the quarter to take a 25-23 lead to the break. Jarvis Vaughan had six to help the Leemen stay close.

The Blazers opened the third on a 6-2 run that gave them a quick 31-25 advantage. Spotswood then caught fire from the field and the lead went to 38-30 on a 3-pointer at the 2:45 mark of the third. The Blazers hit a pair of 3s down the stretch to push the lead to 46-32 after three periods.

The final period was much the same as the Blazers scored several points off turnovers to stay comfortably in front.

George finished the night with 15 points and Vaughan added nine for Lee.

"Give the credit to those guys," a disappointed Lee coach Jarrett Hatcher said. "We had some self-inflicted wounds. It's hard to guard them because they have so many guys who can shoot. We didn't execute well and there wasn't much I liked from our team tonight."

Spotswood coach Chad Edwards was happy with his team's efforts.

"It was an awkward night with playing Lee with all their tradition and it being senior night," Edwards said. "We finished strong in the first half and played well in the second. We mixed up the defense and tried to give them some different looks to guard George and Vaughan and I thought we did a good job."

In the junior varsity contest, the Trailblazers rolled past the Lee 71-36. Elijah Sims paced the Leemen with 14 while Darrion Sims added six. .

Lee will be on the road tonight at Covington.

Spotswood's 6'9 Oudenkirk negates Lee's height advantage, which they usually have in most games.

The Blazers will do very well come tournament time.

I really think for Lee it's a simple formula to a state title. Play a complete game and put 4 solid quarters together. I think if Lee does that then they have a very good chance at the state title. That third quarter is a mystery struggle. Still at 15-4 Lee is going to be a tough out in the postseason.

Leemen .. I see you as a glass half full kinda dude:D Of course to advance they have to put 4 quarters together. Madison, East Rock, and I am going to say even Draft will give Lee all they want. They are not your daddy's Leemen and by the looks of the JV games .. look out in the years to come.

I tend to agree with Valley Man and I've seen Lee play several times. They are tough down low with Darius and Jarvis but less so in their guard play. Martinsville packed the zone in and dared them to shoot from the perimeter. East Rock & Madison will gladly sit outside and bomb 3's at almost 50%. Draft is another story all together with their every whistle 5 man rotation, they just try to wear you out. Lee doesn't typically play more than 6 or 7 kids and that might end up being an issue vs SD.

SD would have no chance vs. Lee.......

Madison and East Rock... those would be legit high level games/play
