This game turned out to be the Ben Maffe show, as the Briar Woods star accounted for the vast majority of the Briar Woods offense and all 5 of their scores. I don't have the stats but I would not be surprised if Maffe had 70-75% of the total Briar Woods offense tonight.
Briar Woods struck first when on the second Westfield possession Westfield's Johnson was picked off by BW's Kleifges on the BW 20 yard line with the return going all the way to the WF 29 yard line. Maffe later scored on an 11 yard run to put BW on top 7-0 at the 11:28 mark of the second quarter. After several back and forth possessions, BW's Maffe fumbled on his own 12 and WF's Jewell recovered the fumble. Unable to punch it in, WF settled for a 24 yard Delaney FG to cut the lead to 7-3, BW, with a few minutes left in the half. After BW went three and out, WF tacked on another 36 yard Delaney field goal on the last possession of the half to go into halftime trailing BW, 7-6.
WF struck first in the second half when on their first possession of the half Asante scored on an 11 yard run to put WF ahead 13-7 at the 5:14 mark of the 3rd quarter. At this point, BW went almost exclusively to Maffe in the wildcat for the rest of the game and started to move down the field easily, with Maffe getting a 1 yard run at the 3:38 mark of the 3rd quarter to put BW back in front, 14-13. After a WF punt, the scene repeated itself as BW again got a Maffe score, this time a 2 yard run to put BW up 21-13 with 10:12 to play. WF punted again, but managed to pin BW deep in their own half, on the BW 3 yard line. After a few plays gained some breathing room, BW punted to WF. On the play, the WF receiver was interfered with trying to field the punt with the end result being WF had the ball on the BW 31 yard line with less than 2 minutes to play. WF managed to find the end zone behind a 4 yard run from Asante, and Johnson converted the 2XP on a QB keeper to tie it up at 21 all with seconds to go in the game. On to OT.
In the first OT WF had the ball first. After an incomplete pass, Asante had an 8 yard run to the 2 yard line, followed by a Johnson run to the 1 yard line. Johnson then scored on a very well executed bootleg to put WF ahead, 28-21. BW immediately countered behind-guess who-Maffe with 2 consecutive 5 yard runs to tie it back up 28-28.
In the second OT, Maffe scored on the first play on a 10 yard run where he broke a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and went to the pylon. BW was back on top, 35-28. WF countered in their series with a 10 yard pass to Eckert on the first play to cut the lead to 35-34. Electing to go for 2XP, WF's Asante was tripped up at the line of scrimmage and fell short of the end zone and BW got the win, 35-34.
