I think LT has a claim to the best secondary in the state with 3 D1 guys in the backfield. I realize they are 4a, but if we are talking state overall then they would have to be at or near the top of the list.During the Friday Football Extra interview from the "Spotlight game of the week" one of Brookville DB's made a statement that he thought Brookville had the best DB's in the state! Agree or not? Are they best in 3A only? What are your thoughts?
At this point I can't disagree with the young man as the Bee's have been very good at keeping points off the board and more importantly seeing that the opposition scores less than they in each of their games this season. However there is a quite stingy defense from a team called Phoebus that may have an argument and a horse in that race. I would love to put Magna Vista in the argument but I can't due to obvious reasons (53 points to JF and 40 to Byrd) but they are starting to show team chemistry as of late, so maybe an argument can be made later in the season.
No doubt Mike Salem. My secondary comments were in regards to 3A alone. I don't know enough about other divisions to give an evaluation but I can tell from posts that you know high school football. I had the pleasure of watching Lake Taylor play last year and was really impressed with the Davis kid, not sure if he graduated or not last year?
That is a key, especially when teams are forced into passing situations they are not accustomed to. It also allows defenses to blitz and add even more pressure. A lot of ducks go up there under those circumstances. But the offense is also important. If they can get a nice lead on a run oriented team (which is most VA teams), they also force them into passing mode which, in most cases, they are just not very good at.Key to DBs is D line. If they can get into backfield, they make DBs look good.
Don't take anything from Brookville. They did play WA and Rustburg. Both pass the ball and the Bees are their only defeats of the year. They're right up there as one of the top 3A teams in VA. The defense is very good but they did give up points in those two games and Rustburg hung right with them until they ran out of gas in the 2nd half. The playoffs will tell all and the Bees still have to play Jefferson Forest, who will likely shred them.I will say this... And you can make it whatever you desire... This is the best DB group Brookville has had in 10 years. Primarily, because it has been a position they have struggled with for some time. They are an aggressive secondary... Taking chances on INTs instead of coverage.... Standing up and stripping balls out... They hit hard and have the exact same attitude to match it... It has been paying off for them. But I believe that it is because they have not lined up against a team with a few marquee playmakers on their offense. A team that gets the ball to the playmakers, and expects them to do something with it after the catch. They have yet to see a team with a couple of super real deal players. I am definitely not shocked to hear the overwhelming comments of being that good, but that is a bit far fetched. I am certain I could find 10 teams in the state with a better secondary, in my opinion...
shread, heck Landis better stop giving up so many points on defense, I saw what salem did in the game, they tend to out score u..do you realize heritage picked them apart and turned the ball over in the redzone, atleast 3-4 times ..u can't be in a shot out every week and expect to win which we all saw last year when navy came off and they lose, defense wins championships we all know, but they will have there hands full covering the bee's, salem and magna Vista will tell you that, salem ran the trap all over jf, there not that good u are surpose to beat the teams they play,am thinking they both go into that game 9-0 for the clash, will be a good game.. well I guess teams like kicking the ball to navy and losing the special teams battle, ph had jf beat but they kicked to him and that was the back breaker..Don't take anything from Brookville. They did play WA and Rustburg. Both pass the ball and the Bees are their only defeats of the year. They're right up there as one of the top 3A teams in VA. The defense is very good but they did give up points in those two games and Rustburg hung right with them until they ran out of gas in the 2nd half.
