Carlisle beat GW 56-55 after a last-second shot by senior Corey Beard went over the rim with the buzzer blaring on Monday night.
But GW had an opportunity to take the lead on its previous possession. Still trailing by one, the Eagles ran their offense till the ball ended in Amardius Jones’ hands along the baseline. Jones drove to the hoop, but a Carlisle steal ended that threat, leading to Osabuohien’s free throws.
GW coach Ron Parson thought there should’ve been a foul called before the steal, as Jones clearly looked like he was contacted.
“I thought Amardius got fouled there at the end, but they said he hooked him,” Parson said. “I’m tired of playing them. They shot 29 free throws and we shot four, and it’s like that every time we play them. You can’t tell me they played that good defensively, and we played that bad.”
Sophomore Rasir Bolton shot 11 of those free throws for Carlisle, and knocked down nine of them as part of his game-high 21 points.
But the Chiefs only have seven players on its roster, and after having to finish an 81-59 loss to Oak Hill Academy with just four players on the court, Carlisle has emphasized a more conservative defense.
GW used Carlisle’s short bench to its advantage in the fourth quarter, pressing for most of the frame to tire the Chiefs starters.
That helped the Eagles take a 53-48 lead as junior Patrick Robinson got hot from deep. The forward finished with 18 points, including hitting four of his six three-pointers.
Carlisle made it 53-52 after getting two more free throws by Bolton, followed by a Luke Sasser steal and Osabuohien field goal.
The two teams traded baskets to bring the score to 55-54 in favor of GW. The Eagles had two chances to extend its lead, a one-and-one after a Carlisle fouled following a steal, and a late possession with just over a minute left in the game that ended with a corner three from its center.
After the missed three, Carlisle stormed down the court, drove the lane, and collected two offensive rebounds before finally scoring the go-ahead bucket.
GW plays again today when it hosts Basset at 7 p.m.
