It was a gorgeous night out there tonight but unfortunately the game became less important due to the injuries to two CB players, and there was even a fan from the Riverheads side who needed medical attention. So first and foremost, we hope for a full recovery for each one of those folks.
As for the game, RHS put it away early due to the running game, which CB just could not figure out. The Gladiators got a combined seven touchdowns from their 1-2 punch of Zac Smiley and Braeson Fulton, with one of those scores coming through the air. Aiden Miller scored the final Big Red TD in the third quarter.
For the Drifters, they had their moments and you have to give them credit for their fighting spirit. They accomplished some things other teams have not been able to do. For example, they blocked a Riverheads PAT which spoiled Peyton Skillman's perfect record on the season, they forced the Gladiators into two fumbles, one of which was returned for a TD, and they scored what was by far the most impressive touchdown of the game, on a beautifully-executed 78 yard pass play that looked every bit as pretty as the ones you see on TV every Saturday or Sunday.
As a result I left there impressed with the Drifters, realizing that if the school had a few more bodies to choose from, they could have a consistently winning program. They definitely get maximum effort out of their coaches and players and pound for pound they are a gritty bunch. That competitive spirit must carry over to other sports because I remember clearly when they beat the Gladiators in the state playoffs in basketball 8-10 years ago and went on to win the title that year. So they have some "pride" of their own at that school, even if the red variety dominated on this particular evening.
Going into tonight's game, Gladiator fans had one question they were looking to get answered........Would freshman quarterback Bennett Dunlap retain his starting spot after having performed far above his age in the first three games? Or would Big Brother, senior Elijah, return from a lingering baseball injury and assume the starting spot that he likely would have had at the beginning of the year?
Well that question was answered and probably to the satisfaction of both players and all Gladiator fans. Bennett did get the start and led the Gladiators for the first quarter and a half, orchestrating their first few scores, including the TD pass, which went for about 30 yards to Fulton.
Elijah meanwhile started on defense and came in behind center about midway through the second quarter. He too threw a very nice pass to Fulton that looked like it might connect for a score but fell incomplete. They then alternated in the second half, leaving the Gladiator fans fully confident that we will be in good hands the rest of the season regardless of which one is in there at any given time. And let's not leave out middle brother Isaiah, who had his usual nice game on defense as well.
The halftime festivities had a "family affair" kind of feeling also as Coach Casto's youngest daughter Allie (hope I have the name right) was crowned Homecoming Queen. But when the more serious of the two CB injuries happened in the second half, all thoughts turned away from the celebration aspect of things and the crowd was understandably concerned for the injured player.
So this one is in the books and next year RHS will return the favor with a trip to the Beach. Not only that but the Big Red will also visit the Drifters' district-mates, Washington & Lee, to open next season. Save those pennies Big Red fans for that extra gas money!!!
Speaking of road trips, the Gladiators are at Skyline (Front Royal) next Friday for their last non-district game, and then they open district play, also on the road, when they travel to Wilson on October 11th. That will then earn them back to back home district contests against Fort Defiance and Staunton on the 18th and 25th.
CB fans keep us posted on the status of Mothershead, the injured guy. And even though I did not get a program tonight, I believe the young fellow that caught the gorgeous TD pass well beyond the Riverheads defense was named Melino or something like that. Sorry but I do not recall the QB's name so as to give him proper credit.
See you at the Beach next season!!!
