Watched both games this weekend...
Some really good action went down this weekend. Ocean Lakes and Oscar Smith game was the much more physical game. Big one-on-one hits all over the field that drew the ooooooo's from the crowd. Still, Westfield and Centreville did play tough defensively up front, Tyler Love for Cville did have a good game and was hitting out there.
I was expecting exciting plays out of all four teams and they delivered. Smith got the excitement started first scoring on two touchdown strikes down the middle to start the game. Ocean Lakes had big plays of their own through the air and really gashed Smith during the second half on the ground with Crosby and Lewis. If you're a spectator, can't really beat watching a player like A.J. Turner return the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a state semi-final game. Between that, his touchdown run to make it 14-0, and Evan Gray's two long touchdowns for Westfield (his second that gave Westfield a 17-14 lead) there were exciting plays in this game as well.
The depth Ocean Lakes had in their backfield was really impressive, they have a really nice blend of power, speed, and athleticism between the three or four players they can put in at the RB position. On the same level with Centreville as far as depth goes when they are running the football. Lewis had a good game and ran the ball well in the second half, but watching that 260 lb. RB Crosby from OL run up and down the field was something else. Smith had a lot of trouble bringing him down, this was a game where they really needed Josh Sweat in there.
It rained at Centreville Saturday and the conditions did seem to hurt Westfield and their QB. Seemed like he just wasn't able to get a good grip on the ball, the receivers dropped some passes, and Westfield just couldn't get their passing game going the way they probably could have on a dry field.
I said a few days ago that I would question if OL or Smith would be able to hang with Centreville. After watching OL win the way they did on Friday, I'd probably to eat crow and say that not only should they be able to hang with Centreville but they may beat Cville on Saturday. They did look the "real deal" and more dangerous than Westfield with all the speed, athleticism, and power flying around out there.
