It'll be a changing of roles at Hampton High School this year. Longtime Head Boys Basketball Coach Walter Brower is stepping down from his position and the school's Associate Head Coach of the past few seasons, Eric Brown, will be taking the main post. Meanwhile, Brower will stay on staff as the Crabbers' Associate Head Coach.

Brower compiled a record of 589-247 in 33 seasons as Head Coach of the Crabbers, winning three Group AAA State Championships (1989, 1997 and 2012). He was third among active coaches in VHSL history. Only Maury's Jack Baker with 713 wins in 39 seasons and Highland Springs' George Lancaster with 692 victories in 36 seasons had more.

Brown, who was on staff when Hampton beat Petersburg in their most recent State Championship victory, graduated from Old Dominion University.

The Crabbers saw two key players transfer in the off-season, point guard Mastadi Pitt (Atlantic Shores) and Marquis Godwin (Christ School in NC), but will return Class of 2017 guard Jalen Ray, regarded as one of the top underclassmen in the Tidewater area. Last year's team went 19-5 overall, winning the PenSouth Conference Tournament before falling to Group 5A State Tournament runner-up Norview in the regional semifinals.

Hampton hasn't had a losing season since finishing 9-13 overall in 2003-04. In fact, the Crabbers have won 20 games or more 12 times in the past 27 seasons.
