Just some final thoughts on the 2017 Chilhowie Warriors Football season, and a peak into the 2018 season.
I first admit that I did not think the Warriors would have the successful season they did in 2017. I knew they would be competitive, not play for a State Title. I congratulate the players, Coaches, parents, fans and community for a very successful season. I congratulate Riverheads on their State Championship, truly a class bunch of kids.

As for what the Chilhowie Football program will take from the game in Salem, I see that game as a learning experience for the players and coaching staff. No doubt as long as teams like Riverheads and Essex remain in A1, teams in the West will have a tough time with East teams.

Galax found out how to beat a East team a few years ago, and success has continued for the Galax program. What lies ahead for Chilhowie in 2018? Can Chilhowie improve and be more competitive
in 2018? Will the players and staff take the tapes from the Riverheads game and analyze exactly what went wrong, and correct their weaknesses and techniques, and become stronger and faster in 2018?

Chilhowie will have six months to work hard in the off season. Chilhowie only played one or two Seniors, most the team that played in Salem were juniors and sophomores. Most of the players only played either offense or defense, which is very rare for a class A1 school.

I am leaving the Coaching to the Coaches and that is were it should be. As for the players, if the game in Salem did not become a motiving tool to improve your game, then I'm not sure what would be a better tool to motive a young athlete to want to become a better football player.

There are a lot of folks in SWVA very proud of Chilhowie's Football success in 2017, and I am one of those proud fans. Just a word of advise from an old football guy. Don't rest on your success. Become more hungry, passionate, and dedicated to the game. Set your goals that are achievable.

Best of luck Chilhowie.

I see Chilhowie making a strong run next year also. I'm sure they will put in the work to get back again and with a young team that State experience is priceless. RH learned from the 2015 State game and came back better and stronger. I think this year was a slight surprise that RH won with a mostly junior led team. I think for 2018 they are expected to get there again with a whole bunch of seniors. I'm not sure if this is 100% correct but I had heard that next year the semifinals would match A vs C and B vs D. Correct me if you've heard or know something else. That could put RH and Chilhowie together again in one semifinal and maybe have a Galax from C going against an Essex or Sussex from A in the other. Not trying to slight other teams as I don't know what other teams return, so just going on this past year. Feel free to post about other teams outlook for 2018. Hope everyone has a great year going forward.

Since they have always expressed concern about the travel, that would seem odd to do it that way, but as Coach Casto always says, we will go play wherever they tell us to.

If like this year, highest power points team hosts, RH could actually host a semi for once. Travel is no different than the cross brackecting in previous years prior to this one. RH traveled to GW in 2015 and to Galax in 2016. Hosting would be different!

I was thinking of it mainly in terms that an A/B match-up and a C/D match-up in the semi-final round involves the least possible amount of travel. Imagine for example if somebody from the lower regions of C had to travel to the Northern Neck or worse yet, the Eastern Shore, or vice versa. I personally love road trips and I think the players do also, but my guess would be that the VHSL would want to keep travel to a minimum if they could.

No perfect solution to this problem, but the RH trips to GW and Galax were shorter than this years trip to Middlesex to play Essex. Go figure! I agree that the players actually enjoy the road trips. Maybe RH should just keep traveling. Chilhowie to Middlesex is only 343 miles.:)

Oh I can assure you that RHS does not mind traveling in the least. Counting this year, we have advanced to the state semi-finals seven times and we had to travel on each and every one of those occasions. We have played seven different teams and won six of the seven. With that kind of success, I would say the attitude around Greenville is "warm up the bus" but in a good way!!!!

The Warriors will need to get much stronger to compete against the East . IMO they would not have won games against 7 of the teams from the Shenandoah . Also their speed will need to improve . They had a great run and wish them the best of luck next year .

Good luck next year, from what I saw this year Chilhowie will be back in Salem next year, but it will be a big task against one of the better 2A teams playing 1A ball.

Stir the pot ! The truth is Riverheads JV team wins in a contest with the Chilhowie Varsity ! My guess is if Chilhowie makes it to Salem It will show just how weak the West is . The Red Team will be an odds on favorite to be back in Salem for the next few years .
Even if the student count continues to fall witch is 452 now , they will be in the hunt ! Most of the students leaving are girls . They are not able to carry those Championship Trophies around to make room in the class rooms ! LMAO .
