Clarke County Hall of Fame night marred by controversy with band

I do believe it’s time to put this one to bed as the horse can’t be beaten too much more. The coaches do a great job with our kids on the football team (just like every coach does at Clarke with their respected sport). The same way that the band director does with the kids at Clarke. Senior night went off without a hitch prior to the game last Friday and the halftime show with the band did as well. Just like 99.9% of the time. Good luck to Clarke as they travel to Mason this Friday. Amazing what can be argued about on a sports site. I’m just sorry that Chandler’s name has to be on top of this thread in regards to the HOF as I’m quite sure he doesn’t deserve to have any negativity under his name on his accomplishments while at Clarke. With that said, I’m done commenting on this thread and better yet done looking at it.

And that is completely my fault, I mean no disrespect to his accomplishments. I just figured out how to change the heading, so I did. Not gonna discuss this anymore.

A few points:

* The HOF intros were over the top. These kids deserve the attention but to throw in stats like 'Finished 10th in the state in the triple jump' is ridiculous in comparison to their other accomplishments. Time consuming to say the least. Not to mention Chandler Rhoads was introduced that night and again the next week.

* The band competes. This is a 2A Fall board. The thread name change helps.

* Moe, 10 minutes of kicking competition could have meant 10 minutes of the band playing.

* Intros will now be held before the game so obviously there was a problem and the administration did not have the foresight to see this (unlike 95% of other schools)

* Seniors were introduced BEFORE the game last week. That's why it went off without a hitch. Also, the middle school band members were able to play at halftime. This was a great move by our band director to show the community our current talent along with the kids of the future. Kudos to his direction and leadership.

Just a practice, ha! As was the football game for Clarke County. :D
I guess you have read Rules for Radicals! Distort, divert and demean. Good for you! Doesn’t change the fact that this is a sports forum; band is not a sport; Clarke has a good football program.

I wish all the band members much success in THEIR competitions. And hope they continue providing a halftime respite while the football teams regroup and prepare for the second half of THEIR competition.

I had the good fortune of attending the Duke and UVA football game this past weekend. The duke band was very very entertaining. I found it of note that they played after almost every play. But stopped playing when the teams broke the huddle.

Scholarship competitors and adults are better at listening.

I found this article very interesting when it comes to the athleticism of a band member.

Excerpt: In a study conducted by ESPN of a drum corps performer using equipment to measure heart rate and oxygen intake, it was found that even when watching the production from the sideline, the performer’s heartrate shot up to 180 bpm, compared to a track star’s response to hearing the starting pistol being fired. What the study found after tracking the performer’s systems during a performance was that his heart rate was over 200 bpm and that his rate of oxygen intake during the show was approximately 14-times higher than his resting rate. This consumption rate is, “generally what it would be in the middle of a marathon, for a well trainer runner.” However, the recorded heart rates throughout the production were found to be relatively similar those of at the maximum heart rates of a 600-meter or 800-meter sprinter.

Why not just have the band play after the game? They could play to their hearts delight to any fans who wanted to stay.
We get it Law Dog. You don't like the band. They were scheduled to play. They were bumped for a kicking contest by Malloy Ford Dealerships. A solution to the problem has been reached.

Glad you finally realized that Friday Night Lights are about football! Have fun the rest of the season. Maybe you can play at halftime of the basketball games?!? Or between volleyball sets or the national anthem before baseball or softball games. There are lots of opportunities for the band to play at sporting events if they want to contribute.

Oh, I like the bands a lot...just not when game play is ongoing...or when they leave early...or when the director/parents try to make it about themselves...other than that, the band is cool

For the home Union football game, the band was told that seating wasnt available. For rain, the band doesnt play in the rain. It tends to ruin instruments. For the trip to Woodgrove, the band doesnt travel to road games. Because you decide to call it a home game doesnt make it a home game. Senior band members will be honored tonight AT the football game, not at a competition. We're glad the football team will have us.

I'll start by saying that i respect athletics and arts, but you are wrong saying bands do not play in the rain. While in high school our band played rain or shine. I had one brother play in his DII college marching band and another who played in The Best Damn Band in the Land and guess what....rain or shine.

I know that typically the band and football clash, which is sad. I coach and have always given the band respect and would attend competitions. With that being said their is an etiquette to it and bands do need to know proper time to play and be aware that when their halftime performance goes over that yhe team could be penalized. In college, the band can be penalized if they play and disrupt the opposing teams communication.

Was it at halftime of the football game? Cmon man.

Whole different ball of wax and you know it. It is the Halloween season so stirring the pot is almost acceptable...almost but not really.

If the fans and cheerleaders are part of the football game experience then so is the band. Period. In the words of Lou Rawls, there’s no ifs and buts or maybes.

Being a spectator is not a sport yet here we are discussing spectating.

At PH in Roanoke we have an excellent band program.

It also may interest you to know that not every band competes. For some marching band programs, football games at halftime are it.

I was in band once upon a time. I have mad respect for these kids and their director.

Too each his own. As I have said more than once, I respect the talent it takes to make a joyful sound and precision of the bands.

But the game is the reason for the season; all the rest is complimentary window dressing. Some folks think the opposite is true. It’s okay to disagree, I hope!

Haven't seen this question asked or considered. Is their a time limit on halftime? What would it have hurt to let the band perform since they were on the field already. Most shows are what? 12 minutes??? This is ridiculous. A good admin always sides with the interests of the kids..rules or procedures be damned. More importantly, a classy football team would have refused to play until after the band had played. They missed an opportunity to unify the school, send a message that they supported their classmates, and make a magical moment and maybe national headlines in a good way for CCHS. Courage is exhibited in many different ways..

15 minutes. 20 if it's homecoming. Go any longer and the opposing coach can get refs to throw flag to start the 2nd half. It happened to me in the fall of 2008. Flagged for reading senior night scripts too long.

Thanks for the info. My thoughts are though that if any opposing coach pushes the refs to throw the flag because the band is performing over the time limit on HOF night, he would be labeled a POS chump coach...so seriously doubt any would do it. In fact most I know would side with the band performing rules be damned. I've seen halftime go long many many times over decades and usually all I see is the halftime clock get reset for team warmups as soon as the festivities etc are over. I don't think a 12 min halftime performance would have made any difference.

Well, in my case, it was the first year after the schools split. So the seniors had spent three years at opposing coach's school, and only a few months at the school they would just spend senior year. So all their accomplishments were from the other school, and yet he still got the ref to throw the flag, so I will let you be the judge on what to label that coach.

If he has any integrity, he regrets it, otherwise he is what I said he would be.
