I know since this is a fall sports board we tend to get fixated on football when the topic is how the classifications should be divided. Certainly you need at least 11 players on the field at a time, while its 5 in basketball, 6 in volleyball and 9 in baseball/softball and 10 when a DH/Flex is considered.
So, since football is not the sole consideration for classification divisions, I decided to look back at the past 3 years for state champions and runners-up in baseball, softball, volleyball, boys basketball and girls basketball to see if the bigger schools are dominating in those sports on the Class 1/Class 1A/Group 1A level. The ADMs were the #s used to created the current classifications.
So, here's what I found:
* Of the 30 teams who played for state championships in those sports 12 had ADMs above 400 and 18 400 or below.
* Of the 30 teams who played for state championships in those sports only 3 had ADMs below 300
* Of the 15 state champions, 5 are now Region 1A, 2 Region 1B, 7 Region 1C, and 1 Region 1D
* Of the 15 state runners-up 6 are now Region 1A, 1 Region 1B, 5 Region 1C, and 3 Region 1D
