Class 3 Girls Championship: James Monroe vs Lord Botetourt

James Monroe 29 Lord Botetourt 23 HT. JM is very athletic and plays tough defense. LB has been very good at attacking and getting to the line.

LB starts the 3rd on a 7-0 run and take the lead 30-29 with 5:57 in the 3rd quarter. Over 20 turnovers by JM is hurting them

LB with a little breathing room now. 49-40, 3:49 left. Way too many turnovers by JM

Lord Botetourt 49 James Monroe 44 Final. LB wins their 5th state championship and ends the undefeated season of JM. The experience of LB showed in the 2nd half.

After I watched LB beat Spotswood on their home floor I knew they were going to win state.

JM seemed to steam roll their opponents - but after I glanced at their schedule I knew they were up against a team they hadn’t faced all year.

Great season Lord Botetourt. Way to walk James Monroe down and grind out the Dub.

Congratulations Lord Botetourt. They played very smart when they got the lead. JM had a great season. JM played two class 5 teams from Spotsy (Riverbend and Massaponax) who both played in their regional playoffs. It would be good to add other tougher non-district games. Culpeper is the only other Class 3 team in their district, I think, so almost all of their games were against Class 4 or above. That said, Lord Botetourt was by far the best team we played the whole season. JM had a good first half, up six at halftime and led by as many as 10 in the first half. Lord Botetourt owned the second half.

What was the talley on James Monroe's turnovers? Credit LB for making JM uncomfortable the whole game.

All season, JM moved the ball from the other team's end to their end by looking down court and passing the ball. Today it was one person dribbling and LB made them pay for that. LB also did a great job of getting down the court both on defense and when transitioning to offense. LB getting back so well on defense probably had something to do with that too. They were very fundamentally sound which reflects well on their coaching. I'm proud of JM, my almamater. We had a great season. I told our AD at a game this year that it would take a great team having a great day to beat us and that's what happened today. I was very impressed with LB.

Ya can't win a chip with that type ball security..seems teams from the West are more fundamentally sound.
Yes, many of the western girls teams are fundamentally sound and play a physical brand of basketball that teams in the east don't see. It's very evident in class 1 through 3

Big facts! It's been that way for years.
Also, these girls are playing year round. For many of the teams out east, it's just a seasonal sport. You can't just pick up a basketball in November, when these teams out west have been playing all summer and basically year round.
