First of all incredible atmosphere. Both schools had tremendous fan support and for most of the night, the two student sections raised the roof with just about every point that was scored. But as for the caliber of play on the floor, the plain and simple truth is that PH was clearly the better team tonight. In fact, at the risk of making some enemies here locally, I can say that they impressed me more than Wilson, the defending state champs at the 2-A level.
We had no idea coming in how the two teams would stack up against one another for the simple reason that they had no common ground, being from so far apart. We might have seen a down-to-the-wire five-set match or we might have seen a domination by one team.
Well if you were wearing blue, you got that dominating win, as PH controlled every aspect of the action tonight, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-11. They controlled the match sooooo completely that Riverheads never had the lead at any point all night. The closest the Gladiators came was in the second set, when they tied the score at 6 and again at 7, and later crept back to within 21-19 before the Rebels pulled away. So who knows, if the Big Red could have pulled out that second set, it might have changed the momentum, but it was not to be.
So congratulations definitely go out to the Lady Rebels and I especially admired the play of numbers 2 and 11. So PLEASE tell us they are both seniors so the rest of the state can have a chance next year!!! And speaking of seniors, Riverheads only loses two, so they should be right back in the thick of things next year. Congratulations to the Lady Gladiators for a tremendous season and also kudos to Coach Stapleton for taking the team so far in such a short coaching career. For those of you who don't know this, she was a PLAYER on the Gladiators' 2014 squad that lost in the 2-A title game to Gate City, and now at (I assume) 22 or 23, she took her team to yet another title game. Don't be surprised if she gets snatched up somewhere along the line if she has that kind of aspiration.
As for those two rowdy fan sections, keep in mind that both football teams are still alive so they could match cheers again before all is said and done, although it would not happen until the state title game. So if each one wins two more games, see you in Salem on the 8th!!!
