Well folks high school football is just about over for 2016 in Virginia. In my opinion, the season
Was a success for most schools. It is hard to measure success in terms of wins and loses. I am
Not even sure we should do that on the high school level. I guess each school would need to define
What success means to their team, their school, or their community.
Having a winning Season probably would fit the definition of a successful season for most schools.
But, on the other hand, falling short of that at some schools, would not mean success. If a team improved from 1or 2 wins to 5 or 6 wins, to me that would indicate success.
But folks, all that is measuring our teams season by wins and loses. Is that good. No! Absolutely
Not. If a bunch of kids played hard, learned the game more, and enjoyed experiencing fellowship with
Their friends, hey that is success to me, irregardless of the won loss record. I think we put to much
Emphasis on winning. There can be only one State Champ, so does that mean all of the other
Kids and schools in A1 are losers, of course not.
If that is the case, man we got some problems with our judgement of the game of high school
Football. Of course we play the game to win, but to say that if we don't win the Championship, well
The season was A failure. Wrong! The game of football teaches our youth how to win with class,
And how to except defeat with class also. It is the life lessons we all learn; players, coaches, parents,
And fans.
If we get some type of enjoyment when another team loses, and we just can't wait until we can rub
It in more, that is not class folks. I, for one don't want nothing to do with that kind of winning. We as adults Should set the examples for our youth, both in good times and hard times. If we show our kids that We as adults can except defeat just as well as we can enjoy victory, that adult has done something Very good for that young man; teaching him something that he will carry with him the rest of his Life, and just maybe, he will do the same for his child.
If that happens, we are all winners, My Friends. Yes folks, it was a good year. Sure, we all seen
Disappointment at times, but we dealt with it with class and character. If you played football this
Year, You are a winner in my eyes. Congratulations !!!!!!!
