Courtland had very little trouble with a good MV team tonight at courtland high school. on the third play from scrimmage after Courtland's defense stuffed the cats. newly Fredericksburg Christian transfer Blair Lawson on a buck sweep ran 78 yards to the end zone. this kid is really going to be a weapon in what is already a potent offense. This kid along with Vic Green and George Cheetum may be the best backfield in the area. along with the excellent passing of Jabari Allen and Chet wellborn they will be hard to stop.
On the second possession qb wellborn threw a beautiful pass to the speedy Vic Green to make it two scores to nothing Courtland. then after MV scored on a pass play making it 2 td's to 1 Vic green made a dazzling run of 60 yards breaking several tackles making it 3 td's to 1 in the first half.
after both teams using mostly subs that neither team scored in the second half both put their starters back in and Courtland scored on a beautiful pass play from wellborn to Vic green of 35 yards making it 4 td's to 1. that is the way it ended.
the offensive stars for Courtland was Green Lawson and the passing of Wellborn and Allen and the receiving of Grant and Allen. yes that's right Jabari Allen as a receiver. he seem to be much bigger and taller and was a inviting target for wellborn along with the speedy Grant and Hokerson that returns to the line up in a couple weeks after getting injured playing soccer. the cougar offensive line is big and strong this year with the massive ben Beaty and Colby Heart anchoring a veteran returning line that played well. going to be a offensive juggernaut.
on defense the cougars was lead by Kyree Mc Cain a very aggressive DB that made some excellent defensive plays. also Nick Kiaffa and DB Dakoda Woodward played well. the interior line stopped the cats on the ground lead by Ben Beaty a huge tackle. MV is a good football team and the cougars stuffed their running game and other than a few pass plays they were excellent on defense.
hard to tell a whole lot in a controlled scrimmage but one thing for sure is Courtland is a excellent well balanced football team that with their tough schedule playing Ponax Riverbend Louisa Faquier and Liberty before the battlefield schedule they may have a losing record and still be a top team in the state. preps has them ranked 4th behind powerhouse teams Lake Taylor Dinwiddie and Salem. if the cougars do make the playoffs it may be hard for them to have any home field advantage because they may have lost 3 or 4 games for the season. if they advance on it will be a tough road to a state title with teams that I have just named between them and a state title. we shall see but it sure was great to see HS football again. GOOD LUCK COUGARS!

If Courtland is as good as you say they are , who in the heck in that schedule is going to beat them? I would give Ponax a good chance at it , but the others are not teams that beat a top 5 4A team . IMO. Courtland 9-1'at worse is how I see it.

@skynard1 Thanks for the write up. Football's back! Did the FLS do their annual big football feature? If so I need to find a copy. They don't deliver to Louisa anymore. :(

the only team that they start off with that they shouldn't have trouble with is Faquier but even they was a playoff team last year. Ponax is always got the cougars number and bend has a lot back from a pretty good team last year and a rival too so that will be a challenge. Louisa imo is going to be a playoff team this year and the lions gave courtland all they could handle last year and they return almost the entire squad so that game will be difficult also. liberty bealton has a great program year end and out with a lot of good returning players so that won't be easy. all in all if they come out of these games 2 and 3 I would not be surprised

Nice write up David. Thanks. Really stirred some cravings for HS Football.

The record will be what it is. Ponax, riverbend, JM, Louisa and Liberty(Beal). Don't forget Chancellor. They will be very good this year despite the record of the last few years. I think the Cougars make the playoffs also but I don't think anybody avoids the injuries and gets though to the end With what is one of the most difficult schedules in 4A. Depth will become an issue when you're only putting 35 - 40 on the sidelines.

Massaponax always is a tough game, however Courtland did beat Riverbend 40-14, Louisa 35-21, and Chancellor 56-24 last year and the new running back looks pretty sharp. Of course, I'm a bit biased because I'm Ben Beatty's dad...) It should be a great season, and I'm very excited to watch all of the kids compete.

GL to them in 2015. Same wishes to Ben I always gave to mine. Don't get hurt.

It appears for this game the Officials had Courtland's number.
