Covenant broke open a close game to defeat Portsmouth Christian 42-22 on the opening week of the 2015 football season. The Eagles led 19-14 with 7:30 left in the 3rd quarter but they scored three quick touchdowns on their next three possessions to take a 42-14 lead with 9:05 left in the game. They took seven minutes off the clock by driving 53 yards in 9-plays resulting in a 3-yard plunge from freshman fullback Rick Weaver (5-foot-11, 245).

The Eagles defense forced four turnovers including interceptions by Stephen Wilder and Jacob Smith while a big hit by Colby Shriver, which forced a fumble, seemed to be the big defensive play that changed the momentum of the game. Also on defense, I credited junior Ben Arrington (6-foot-2, 176) with at-least a half dozen tackles.

Senior Sam Lepage scored two touchdowns while rushing for 79 yards on seven carries. Quarterback John Huemme threw one touchdown pass while completing 5 of 11 passes for 67 yards. His first completion was a screen pass to Lepage who made it all the way to the 3-yard line before fumbling the ball into the endzone where it was recovered by Jack Velicky for a touchdown. On his last completion of the 1st half, Huemme connected with senior Josh Klein who made a great fingertip catch with no time remaining on the clock to help the Eagles to a 19-6 halftime lead. was great throw to the endzone

Portsmouth Christian had several highlight plays and strong performances. Linebacker Jarrod Lassiter helped the Patriots with their 1st touchdown by stripping the ball away from Huemme on the 6-yard line. A few plays later, senior Raylan Stockdale scored from 4-yards out. Quarterback Mykal Marraccini connected with Mitchell Miller for a 45-yard completion to the 1-yard line with the Patriots facing a 3rd-and-23. Stockdale crossed the goal line on the next play to pull Portsmouth Christian to within five (19-14). On the Patriots final offensive possession, Stockdale turned the left corner and sprinted 88 yards for a touchdown with 2:47 left in the game.
