Does the weather make any of Fridays games more interesting?

Just wondering if the rain impacts a favorite over an underdog?? May not change who wins, but maybe the game is a bit closer.

Not just passing but most times the teams that rely on speed and shifty players are impacted by the wet fields. Turnovers etc..

I don't think Sherando/James Wood is going to happen this Friday. The field is already a mess from the rain we've gotten and it's supposed to continue on and off leading into Friday. Funnily enough last year's game was also postponed due to rain.

EDIT: Yup, just got word that it's been postponed.

I've always thought that bad weather and poor playing surfaces are equalizers. Nobody is fast in thick mud; nobody can pass as well in heavy wind and rain. Artificial surfaces have taken care of the mud and standing water problems; they still get slick, and can have an impact on performance, but that impact seems to be minimal compared to the typical natural grass field.

Yeah, this was the same week last year that had all the heavy rain. Tis the season, I guess.

I told Navy yesterday, I'm a convert. I used to hate turf, but not now. It is a plus when the schools/communities can afford it.

Many areas are still trying to catch up on improvements that were put off since the downturn that started for most in 2008. This is the case here.

I don't know if or when Dinwiddie will ever get turf, but other projects are more important in the near term.

But, we have been very fortunate. Every year recently there has been a major upgrade in some aspect of our athletic facilities. But, $1million plus for turf seems like it is a long way off.

One of the real advantages is that the field can be used by all sports- Jv football, soccer, field hockey, band competitions and not be the worse for wear with minimal upkeep. In the long run it pays for itself. Surprised Smithfield hasn't gotten the Smithfield pork people to make a large donation to get it. A small town like Poquoson got it.

I was told in Frederick county Va , don't know if it is true or not. Pure rumor. But, That if someone wanted to donate money for a turf field at one high school that the school board would not allow it because the other schools wouldn't have the same advantage of having turf. Guess they would consider that unfair to the other schools in some way.

What you stated is what swayed me a couple of years ago. I was guilty of not considering the big picture.

When you can permit unfettered use of the field, that certainly adds significant value to the equation. Especially if you are a "single" high school county without a lot of redundant sites.

From a selfish point if view; the Dinwiddie football program features speed. And we all know that turf accentuates speed. So, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see a beautiful turf field installed here.

I know the folks that have the responsibility to prep the field each week would love to see turf. This week is a perfect example. Trying to line a field has become nearly impossible.

Equality run amuck!

Rain hit the ground in Salem so Carroll County might not show up. I'm about halfway kidding on that. They dodged probably a 70 point loss last year and I only expect that to be slightly less worse this year. I'm not entirely sure they've ever scored against the Salem first string(2014 was a 59-0 blowout but they only lost 47-21 in 2013 but I think all 3 TDs came late). Not sure that will change this year either.

I think one of the Cavs' TDs in 2013 might have come against Salem's first team, but the Spartans were already up 30-some to 0 by the time Carroll scored. Carroll County also recovered a fumble and ran it in from one or two yards out; I can't remember if that was the first or second TD for them.

Your jest is probably not far off the mark. I'd say the wheels have been turning in Hillsville this week, trying to think of a plausible way out of the trip to Salem. If the admin. hadn't been so weasely in their dealings with Salem in the past (especially in regards to last year's game), I could possibly feel some sympathy for them. However, it's not as if this is a case of a 1A taking on some school three times its size. These are both 4A schools involved here.

Which raises the question: are there ever any circumstances where a forfeit is justifiable? I see zero realistic chance of Carroll winning this game; for those of you out east that don't grasp just how bad Carroll is, this is kind of like a Windsor or a West Point taking on a Lake Taylor. So, would they be justified in bailing on the game tomorrow?

Personally, I say unless there is a credible threat of physical harm befalling the student athletes on the forfeiting team, a forfeit based on lack of competitive ability is never justifiable. As long as a school can field a team, they should fulfill their obligation. Forfeiting simply to avoid a potential lopsided loss is unethical. To me, there's much more honor in showing up, regardless of the end result, than there is in not trying at all. Of course, I'd be interested in hearing other opinions.

That wouldn't surprise me one bit.

That's gov't for you

In York county there are 4 high schools- Tabb, Grafton, York, and Bruton. The first three play on artificial turf at Bailey Field and Bruton plays on their own field which is grass. No change is anticipated. Is that fair with or without donation?

My opinion is that life isn't fair for everyone, we have to deal with some things sometimes. But sooner or later if you make good decisions, good things will happen for you. As for the football fields, I think if someone wants to donate money to a specific cause and not to the whole universe , then they should be allowed to do that.

That is not the government's fault. That is citizens bitching and moaning to the school board about it not being fair. The government does not give a rat's you-know-what one way or the other about whether a school has a turf or grass field.

Dinwiddie nvs. Matoaca game postponed until Monday at 7. Guess Matoaca did want to play in the mud. Surprised they beat us on a very wet field last year.

It's been raining here, but it hasn't been a downpour. I live half a mile from the high school and I think the field will be fine for tonight's game.

ClarkeFan83, fyi for tonight, the Clarke County game has been moved to the turf field at Woodgrove HS, still starting at 7:30pm.

Well, I guess I should have looked at this site first before going over to the HS at 7:00!! Not a thing about a change of venue in the local online paper!! Guess I'm staying home, don't feel like driving to Purcellville.
