For the second consecutive night, an Augusta County team traveled to East Rockingham and was shown in no uncertain terms that the Eagles are going to dominate the Shenandoah in basketball just like they did in football this year. They would have already been formidable enough without this new freshman phenom they have imported, but he and senior Dalton Jefferson are going to be a twosome that might not be stopped all year.

Can't speak for the Draft game last night, but in this one tonight, the Eagles, especially Jefferson, were just unconscious from three-point range. Jefferson, who looks like he should be most comfortable dominating as a post player, instead specializes in the three and he just flicked them in effortlessly all night long. Unofficially I had him for eight, Nickel added a couple more, and some others got into the act as well. I would say the team as a whole converted a minimum of 13 treys tonight.

The Gladiators would have been overmatched anyway, given East Rock's incredible height advantage, but when you add that kind of shooting to the mix, it just proved to be a deadly combination that RHS could just not answer. So as I said last night, the best thing to do with this game is thank your lucky stars that it came early in the season when you are trying to find your identity anyway, and hope to make a better showing next time around. Grant Painter led the Gladiators tonight, as he will most nights, with an 11 point effort.

I might actually owe the RHS JV team an apology this evening. In my review last night, I had predicted that BOTH Gladiator teams would be, and I quote myself, "heavy underdogs" in Elkton tonight. Well the Junior GMen did lose 48-39 but they improved by leaps and bounds over last night's game at Stonewall and gave the Eagles all they could handle tonight.

RHS came out firing from behind the arc, dropping in four in the first quarter to grab the early lead. Ryan Farris then capped off a low-scoring second quarter with another one as the Big Red took a 21-17 lead into the locker room. The Eagles eventually rallied to win the game, but RHS deserves credit for hanging in there and the re-match in Greenville could be interesting.

For right now, each Gladiator team will try to pick up its second win of the season as they travel to Luray Wednesday night before finally meeting the home folks for the first time next Friday night when R E Lee visits the Coliseum.

Sounds like East Rock can go inside or out and certainly those are keys to winning a title. How did their defense look?

That game next Saturday in Staunton between East Rock and Lee should be a good one to see. I do agree that East Rock is probably the favorite...but Lee has reloaded and will be a good team as usual.

It seems East Rock, Lee, Wilson, Page, and Draft are your 5 teams playing for 4 postseason bids in 2A. Riverheads will be in in 1A come tourney time.

Leemen .. seems I have to always point this out to you:D

Your first post in Week 3 already talking playoffs spots??????

Let's enjoy the season at least til Christmas:cool:

It's never to early to talk about tourney possibilities lol. I will say if Lee takes care of Luray, Fort, and Riverheads this week and East Rock takes care of Madison, Stonewall, and Gap...we could have two 6-0 teams in Staunton Saturday night.

That would be a nice Christmas gift of a game and...could impact the tourney seeding. There I go with tourney seeding...I can't help myself haha.

I think we can both agree it's nice to have Basketball back in season and lets enjoy the road to Richmond!

What many don’t realize is while Nickel did transfer from EMHS, he grew up in Elkton schools and only went to EMHS for one year to reclassify because he was young for his grade. Nickel would’ve been at East Rock either way, he was on the JV team two years ago as an 8th grader at East Rock.

The Eagles should roll through the Shenandoah...two match ups against Spotswood will highlight the schedule in January.

The Leemen have my permission to overlook their game at Riverheads Friday night in anticipation of this big one on Saturday.

Longtimer....I'm sure Lee won't overlook Riverheads Friday. The Gladiators darn near got Lee in Staunton last year. I think a missed three at the buzzer is all that saved Lee that night...so no overlooking them on my part. I'm sure Riverheads will be ready to go for their home opener. Riverheads is going to make a lot of noise in 1A...so they will get more fine tuned as the season rolls along.

No matter what...that game Saturday appears to be the only show around so...should still be a good Saturday night of basketball in Staunton. We should know a lot more about teams in the Shenandoah by Sunday..

I agree that Riverheads will learn a lot about its team on Friday and that East Rock at Lee Saturday will answer a lot more questions. The Eagles looked mighty impressive to me, and I could not BELIEVE how easy Jefferson makes it look out there. There were times he looked like he was shooting with his eyes closed and was halfway back up the floor, just assuming it was going in. So based on what I perceive to be Lee's losses to graduation, I cannot see the them hanging with the Eagles, even on their own floor. But hey, that is why they play the games!
