For the second consecutive night, an Augusta County team traveled to East Rockingham and was shown in no uncertain terms that the Eagles are going to dominate the Shenandoah in basketball just like they did in football this year. They would have already been formidable enough without this new freshman phenom they have imported, but he and senior Dalton Jefferson are going to be a twosome that might not be stopped all year.
Can't speak for the Draft game last night, but in this one tonight, the Eagles, especially Jefferson, were just unconscious from three-point range. Jefferson, who looks like he should be most comfortable dominating as a post player, instead specializes in the three and he just flicked them in effortlessly all night long. Unofficially I had him for eight, Nickel added a couple more, and some others got into the act as well. I would say the team as a whole converted a minimum of 13 treys tonight.
The Gladiators would have been overmatched anyway, given East Rock's incredible height advantage, but when you add that kind of shooting to the mix, it just proved to be a deadly combination that RHS could just not answer. So as I said last night, the best thing to do with this game is thank your lucky stars that it came early in the season when you are trying to find your identity anyway, and hope to make a better showing next time around. Grant Painter led the Gladiators tonight, as he will most nights, with an 11 point effort.
I might actually owe the RHS JV team an apology this evening. In my review last night, I had predicted that BOTH Gladiator teams would be, and I quote myself, "heavy underdogs" in Elkton tonight. Well the Junior GMen did lose 48-39 but they improved by leaps and bounds over last night's game at Stonewall and gave the Eagles all they could handle tonight.
RHS came out firing from behind the arc, dropping in four in the first quarter to grab the early lead. Ryan Farris then capped off a low-scoring second quarter with another one as the Big Red took a 21-17 lead into the locker room. The Eagles eventually rallied to win the game, but RHS deserves credit for hanging in there and the re-match in Greenville could be interesting.
For right now, each Gladiator team will try to pick up its second win of the season as they travel to Luray Wednesday night before finally meeting the home folks for the first time next Friday night when R E Lee visits the Coliseum.
