Essex 21 Surry 0 Starting the 2nd Q. NM

Just saw on Facebook that with a few seconds remaining in the 4th, both coaches must of gotten together to let an Essex player with autism score a TD in the final seconds of the game. So with that td is 53-14 for those that might see 53-14 instead of 47-14.

Classy display. I have a soft spot for stories like that.
On another note...what's going on at Surry? Talk about a huge drop off in performance.

The kids aren't coming out to play, enrollment is down, two of their top players transferred (Running back to Smithfield, Qb to Woodside). They're top receiver transferred to Smithfield 2 years ago. The other athletes have decided that they were one sport athletes and are concentrating on basketball only (to small of a school for one sport athletes).

That is a growing trend with all athletes. Travel ball and AAU have killed the 2 or 3 sport athlete. Not that they don't have their place but I would say about 90% of travel and AAU teams are just glorified rec teams. Doesn't matter if their coach played in the pros. Plenty of HS coaches play in the NFL and can't win coaching HS. But kids and parents drink the Kool aid and decide to become one sport athletes. At the 1A level it is especially sad because it doesn't help you get recruited. If you are recruitable, you will get contact at whatever level.

I live in Smithfield, both of my sons have bought houses in Surry. It's a great community. But there's VERY LITTLE for the kids to do outside of high school sports and band. Back in the early 80's when I was in HS, Surry's football squad was damn near 40 deep. Or so it seemed.
I just don't like seeing a HS program with so much history of success fall like that. I read over the weekend that student enrollment numbers have been declining also. Would be sad to see them take the same path that Charles City did this year.
