SWOOPE - On a night when offense dominated the stage, a defensive stand stole the spotlight and cemented an impressive comeback for Buffalo Gap's football team.
The Bison, who rallied from a two-touchdown deficit against Robert E. Lee, thwarted a field-goal try from close in before Carter Rivenburg scored his fourth TD of the game to spark Gap to a 40-38 victory over the Leemen in Shenandoah District action at Buffalo Gap High School.

It was a game reminiscent of last year's shootout at Winston Wine Stadium in Staunton, when the Leemen outlasted the Bison 38-34. This time, it was the Bison who came out on top as Rivenburg rushed for over 200 yards and went over 1,000 yards for the season in just his fourth game.
"This year, we finished," Bison head coach Andy Cline said. "Our kids saw some speed that hadn't seen this year and it took them awhile, but they responded to it."

Down 24-16 at the half, Gap watched Lee add to that lead on the first play of the second half. Garrett Lawler got loose for a 68-yard scoring run and Marcos Sasia made the PAT to put the Leemen up 31-16.
But the Bison bounced back with a pair of long scoring drives to take the lead.

First, Seth Fitzgerald capped an 80-yard drive with a 36-yard run on the ensuing drive. Collin Bowers ran for the conversion, and it was 31-24 Lee, with 11:04 left in the third.
The Bison forced Lee to punt, then took off on a 78-yard drive that took over five minutes off the clock in the third quarter. A 1-yard plunge by Rivenburg and Fitzgerald's two-point run put Gap in the lead, 32-31.

Lee came right and drove deep into Gap territory as Lawler and quarterback Will Dod alternated runs to get the Leemen down to the Bison 12. A 6-yard run by Lawler gave Lee a first and goal at the 6, and he got it down to the 3 as the quarter ended.
It was there Gap defense stood tall as it threw back Lawler for no gain on second and third downs. The Leemen were then called for delay of game, then illegal procedure to make it fourth and goal at the 14.

Sasia came out for the 31-yard field goal attempt, but his kick was low and blocked by the Gap defense. The Bison took over with a chance for an insurance score.
"They just lined up and came right down the field at us," Cline said. "But our kids were timely tonight and we were fortunate to get that block."

As for the insurance score, that came on the next series, which started with a 10-yard run by Rivenburg with a personal-foul penalty on Lee tacked on to get the ball to the Gap 40.
The Bison kept driving and had a third and 8 at the Lee 43. That's when Rivenburg got his fourth TD on a 43-yard run with 7:12 left and Bowers got his third conversion run to make it 40-31.

But Lee wasn't finished. After getting Gap to turn the ball over on downs at the Lee 30 with under 4:00 left, the Leemen mounted a 70-yard scoring drive that ended with a 20-yard TD pass from Dod to Dylan Bowyer with 2:43 left to make it 40-38.
However, Gap recovered the onside kick at the Lee 45, Rivenburg got a first down and the Bison drained the clock to close out the win.

There was a litany of mistakes Lee coach Scott Girolmo talked about after the game — the missed field goal, a fumbled squib kick after Rivenburg's final TD, bad penalties. But Girolmo said the Leemen's path to improvement is clear.
"We have to find the good, fix the bad and get ready for Stonewall Jackson," he said. "My hat's off to Andy and his players for the job they did. They just beat us."
