Finally they admit to it

I was just reading that article. It appears to me that some folks in VHSL who decide locations of tournaments need to be replaced. Surry County girls was 1A East champions yet they had to travel 374 miles to play a runner-up who had to travel less than an hour to Bristol. Teams this season traveled over 4,000 miles farther than last season.
I think each person within VHSL decision making process should be required to buy a state map and enroll in summer school at a middle school to learn the geography of the state.

Hopefully we will see some positive changes in the format next year.

Winners should get to play close to home in the quarterfinals, and the state tourney should include the final four teams all in one location.

No, you won't. Someone from the VHSL will always say "We could do what everyone wants if Virginia was shaped like a square or a rectangle". They go for the "dollars" when choosing the regional and quarterfinal sites - not logic. And they simply don't care about the game site interfering with academics, either.

Who did they play

I have very limited sympathy here. I think locations should be more easily changed when a mismatch of this proportion occurs, but honestly...this is something West schools have dealt with for years. Some (though not as often) East schools as well. It is just the nature of getting to the main stage. You will travel far. If you are unable to win, then the better team will have beaten you. However, conceding the game to Salem or Harrisonburg would have been a better option considering the seeding in this one particular instance.

Just play all tournament games in Lynchburg and most travel problems would be solved. Lynchburg is most centralized venue in the state. (Charlottesville a close second).

I remembers the herberts of the VHSL did play there at Jerry's place for sum' time but thetrey hears that Mr. Jerry wanted a bigger piece of the VHSL's pie and moved the big dance to Richmond. thetrey 'members having to walk a long way to dat gym there in Richmond and having to pay an arm and a leg for parking.

The VHSL just isn't very smart. VCU sucked up to VHSL to get tournament there. I doubt if VHSL even took a site visit. If they did, only thing they looked at was parking for VHSL Staff. Last time I was there, the VHSL parking lot had the most security of anything in Richmond. VCU is the last place in state I would put tourney, other than maybe the Scope in Norfolk. But at least Scope had parking and a McDonalds.

Not only was Surry the 1A East Champion and to travel 374 miles to play but ALL of the WEST Teams had just played their Regional Tournament on that Very Same floor they week before!
