The first week in the district went about the way I expected. there was no real upsets as the favorites all won!
KG 43 @ W@L 0: The foxes showed a little more on offense than I thought. yes they beat a very young W@L team but you can bet Todd Jones will have the eagles good by the seasons end. I figured the foxes needed to find a QB and they may have found one in Will Clift. Rashad Peyton is a good back for the foxes new wing t offense. with a rare shut out by the KG defense we need to keep a eye on the up start foxes.
MASSAPONAX 15 @ COURTLAND 14: This one may be the best game of the year with the panthers winning on a FG on the last play of the game under controversy. SHOULD THE OFFICIAL HAVE STOPPED THE CLOCK WHEN PONAX RECEIVER TREY WATKINS HELMET CAME OFF? Well they did stop it and ponax got the kick off before time expires and the cougars lost! imo the panthers looked much slower than the cougars with the exception of QB Joey Benden. this was a very good physical football game. you can see this game on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday night at 7 on Comcast, Verizon and cox cable! don't miss this one fans as this game was a classic.
CHANCELLOR 27 RIVERBEND 24: As i predicted looks like the sleeper team in the battlefield will be the chargers! I predicted that charger QB JASON BROWN may be the best QB that has ever played their and with almost 300 yards passing and 67 yards rushing he may be just that! has their ever been a charger QB that has ever passed for that type of yardage? I doubt it as the chargers as long I have known them has been a rushing team. this was a very good veteran Riverbend team. so look out battlefield as the chargers look for real. we will find out next week as they play massaponax!
MONACAN 48 CAROLINE 0 No surprise here as the cavs are down on talent from transfers and coaching changes. I think coach Yeates is the right coach for caroline and if the parents and administration will be patient he will turn caroline around. hang in their caroline maybe not this year but better days are ahead!
EASTERN VIEW 42@ SPOTSY 0: You really didn't think my boys from post oak had a chance did you? like all spotsy teams they played hard but has not enough talent to beat a big and talented EV team lead by awesome QB Josh Stallings! I like Al Johnson and I hope the spotsy fans be patient with him as Rhome was not built in a day!
DINWIDDIE 48 JM 34: this game went pretty much like I expected. this was a very good Dinwiddie team # 2 in the state. I saw the jackets o line in that scrimmage the other night and it didn't take a genius to see this line is awesome. they ran for over 300 yards against a good Dinwiddie team. those two transfer students Antoine Felton and back DeJon Weldon have eased the loss of that great offensive threat Jay Scroggins. this jacket team has a good offense and the defense is better than all those points they gave up to Dinnwiddie. other than courtland this may be the best team they will play this year. so don't let all those points the defense gave up fool you! JM is a good football team!
well the first week is over and my rankings stay the same. good luck to all the teams as you strive for the playoffs.
1 COURTLAND 0 @ 1
2. JAMES MONROE 0 @ 1
3. CHANCELLOR 1 @ 0
4. KING GEORGE 1 @ 0
5. SPOTSYLVANIA 0 @ 1
6. CAROLINE 0 @ 1

I must say that the Chancellor result really surprised me. Knew they had some talent, but the QB may be better than advertised. That in my opinion is an Upset, all other games went as I suspected. I still believe Courtland is by far #1 and James Monroe is #2 and then the rest of the Battlefield pack.

Nice job sir! JM is very good offensively. Their defense is quick, but the db's had trouble handling Dinwiddie's very good receiving corp. Not sure about your Quote "other than Courtland". I guess we will see if Courtland and Dinwiddie get the chance to meet down the road. The Generals are GW Danville on caffiene. Better be able to match them score for score. Lol. Dinwiddie Pride and I are huge fans of the "Skynard". Keep up the good work.

It was an upset. Riverbend is a talented team. Large. Strong. Running the Spread. D1 talent. The surprise is the amount Chancellor passed. In any other season, it would take them 3 games to make that many attempts. Brown is very talented and it's clear the Chargers have finally changed their offensive play calling to best utilize the talent available. What a new and innovative concept. I love it.

PS. Nice write up David.

When it comes to Chancellor they will go as far as Jason takes them. Its going to be a tough road ahead without a running game! Lets see if it develops over the season.

Too bad Jones and Kapoua transferred to riverbend! if they were still at chancellor man would that have been a potent offense!

Well Kaopua is gone out of high school but Jones would have been great!!! I believe he was one of the forgotten ones during all the change and rebuild.
Had Jason Brown played with 2012 Chargers that's a state championship team there!!
Jason from day 1 i think everyone saw the potential. Definitely a chance to be the best QB Chancellor has seen in terms of all around. He is very smart and can read defenses very well.

Actually, that was a very high caliber team but their issue was not the QB. Penalties and turnovers were the problem. In every loss that year, they beat themselves. The defense was among the best I've ever seen. It had to be incredibly frustrating to be a Charger fan that year.

Briar Woods won the state title 52-0 in 2012 beating Courtland by 30 along the way the same Courtland that beat Chancellor. One player makes that much of a difference?

I think if you review Briar Woods in that year, there was no one in 4A that was even close. The speed. The power. The diversified offense. The talent. Just exceptional. But yes, IMO Chancellor would have given them a better game. Just FYI, I picked the Chargers to win against my Cougars in both games that year. They were the better team. But that's why the game is won and lost on the field. Not the board. I'm sure Bob Oliver still has nightmares over this and to be honest, the loss in the playoffs was because they got out coached. 4 picks on exactly the same play. The game ball that night went to the the DC.

I'm not sure where you've been going here. The Cougars will run the Wing no matter what and try to impose their will. They will likely run the table till the playoffs. They really are good. They can hang with anybody else. But no way I pick them against LT. The defense LT runs would hold them to next to nothing. Only preparing for LT in a different manner offensively can make this a game. That won't happen. What you see on film is what they will come with. Cougars like to say "raw meat". Against LT, it's "dead meat". Of course I'll root for my Cougars but like Clint Eastwood said, "a man's got to know his limitations".

Shauntclair said the key word 4 picks.. Jason isn't as erratic. Very patient calm and poised that wasn't the case with the QB from 2011 and 12. That would have made a huge difference. Not tome to mention Jason got legs.. In my opinion That would have been a game changer as every other position was too notch.
I will agree abou the being out coached that game. Courtland has always been able to do that..
