Still way too low. How they come with these widely different numbers for graduations, entertainment ,etc is beyond me. At 501 does the virus go beserk, and at 101 for weddings and 5,001 for graduations outside?? I’m sure everyone realizes how obscenely controlled we’ve become by our own Government. I’m understanding 1776 more everyday and I’m a middle of the road guy.

You’re 100% correct. Just 10 miles south of Danville, they are at 40% capacity of their stadium capacity in the great state of North Carolina. Not one issue. I agree with the controlled by government. What the hell difference is it to have a 5k graduation cap in a high school football stadium and having 5k people at a high school football game. The same people who call Trump an idiot and inept are the same people who voted black face in and give him a pass because of his political party and pandering. That’s what this country has come to.

They will have everyone back in the stands when playoffs start the State will not want to lose that money
I am hoping when the playoffs start the game restrictions will indeed be very much loosen like NC and not left to local Board of Educations like here.

My issue, as stated somewhere else on this forum, is that VHSL leadership has again let down the Kids & Coaches. Those that pour their 100% efforts into their sport are not being properly supported.

VHSL hasn't communicated its plan to allow more fans to the Governor OR the public. Zero communication from their executive committee as well. This seems to be a weak effort all the way around!!!

The whole reason graduations have been increased was that a group organized to develop a plan & a petition to the Governor. He caved on that and I also cannot understand the difference between graduation & a football game. Expect for the time of the year to be a month or 2 later?? Ehhhh, not seeing it!!???

I get the frustration, and I agree with most of your points. But hear is the devil's advocate part.
1. Graduations don't normally last 2 and a half hours, so they probably should be treated somewhat differently than something that does last that long.

2. We didn't know about the blackface when that guy was elected governor.

How sure are you about #1? I ask that because for the past 4 years I’ve been a huge part of graduation and I know for a fact how long they are, at least at larger schools. By the time you get kids in the right place, help them with their cap and gown, get them lined up, have the actual ceremony and then they take hundreds of pictures with friends and family after, you’re looking at 3 hours, minimum. Also look at all the close interactions above compared to a football game. Last June, our kids were gathering together without mask taking pictures and socializing at our ceremony (lasted 4 hours in the blazing sun btw). I will say that 5k for football is still too large, that’s why the state should’ve followed NC. The school I work at holds 6k capacity. 40% of that is 2,400. Salem Stadium holds around 7,500, that what put them at 3,000 fans. State championships you’re looking at letting 10,000 people in at Liberty and they can still adhere to social distancing guidelines.
2. Wasn’t my point that people didn’t know about it. People still support that 🤡 because he panders and because of his political affiliation even after all he’s done. My statement still stands.

Well, politics aside, the thing that cemented his clown status for me was when he was actually going to demonstrate his moonwalking ability at his blackface press conference until his wife stopped him. That was troubling because it wasn't a 30 years ago bad decision, it was present and future bad decisions.

And I have been a part of every football game and every graduation that my high school has ever held. So I can't speak for the "larger schools", but our graduation ceremonies are 35-45 minutes depending on student speech length. A little time for getting crowd in, and milling around afterward. But that happens at football games too. I have never had a football game go under 2 hours, even when there has been a running clock.

Now, fans naturally spread out more at football games than graduation. Walking around, milling at fence. Heading to concession stands. Use both home and away stands, where at graduation everyone tries to cram into the home stands. So it seems to me that it should not be a % of capacity thing, but really a function of how you spread things out. One school system near us is reversing the graduation. Families bring their own chairs, and sit in pods on football field, and graduates are in stands, socially distanced.

It seems like the solution really should be come up with a plan that works for your facility and customs, shoot it by the local health department for approval, and move on. Instead of having one size fits all policy from state.

I agree, nothing but complete control

Thank you for your respectful response. Feels good to have a different opinion on something and being able to talk about it and agree in the end.

The school I work at is about 1700 kids. I love them for life, but most don’t listen or follow directions better than a 3 year old. While the ceremony may only take an hour, all the extras take longer. That district you speak of is doing it right for graduation this year. I thought the same could’ve been done last year but that’s beyond my pay grade. Also, spreading out does make more sense than an universal policy on capacity. NC has their state championships at Wake, Duke, UNC and NC State. Easily could get 15k fans in each and be spread out. Same would go for any sporting event.
