College or Pro game with replay:

Player catches pass near sideline, running a few steps close to line before cutting back towards middle and being tackled further down field after gaining several yards. Flag comes in at point of tackle for face mask on defensive player. Play is reviewed and determined he stepped out of bounds 20 yards back just after making the catch. Ball is returned to that spot. Is the PF flag picked up or marked off?

My unknowledgeable guess, before it is answer by the experts, is that the penalty stands. Figuring it is a personal foul, regardless when it happens.

I believe live ball fouls after the spot where a play is declared dead by replay are ignored. I think deadball fouls are probably still enforced.

That could lead to dramatic effects. Imagine it's 3rd and goal from a yard out. Team A runs a play action pass to a tight end in the back of the endzone. His catch is ruled a TD, After the play, a player from Team A is flagged for taunting. Then replay rules the receiver's toe was touching the endline, incomplete. instead of 4th and 1, three feet from the goal line, now it's 4th and goal from the 16.

I'll ask some NCAA officials I know to find out for sure.

OK, I was wrong in my guess.

Turns out, In NCAA and NFL, personal fouls -- or any 15-yard fouls -- are enforced. 5 and 10 yard fouls would go away.

Technically there is no replay rule in high school, but there are circumstances where it could apply. it's not unheard of for a play to be allowed to continue when, by rule, it should have ended. I think it would really be taken on a case by case basis and decided on by the crew chief.

I think most people would ignore a hold or incidental facemask that occurred after the point where the play should have been stopped. safety fouls such as personal fouls, however, pose a different situation. The Rule Book doesn't address it, so it's going to be up to the crew at the time.
