I am mainly a 1-A and 2-A poster, but I just had to mention this. For those of us here in the Valley, we read the predictions each week by the Leader sports department. Believe it or not, two out of eight people are predicting that last-place Fort Defiance, which has been destroyed in most of its games this season, will travel to first-place Harrisonburg and beat the Streaks on Friday night.

Being a county sports fan, it sure wouldn't bother me if it happened, but what in the world could those two be basing that on?

Two possible things: 1) Wishful thinking; and/or 2) the fact that both teams played Broadway, and the scores were within a touchdown in both games, even though Harrisonburg won and Fort lost. On the other hand, Harrisonburg beat Spotswood, and Spotswood blew out Fort, so while it would not be the upset of the century if Fort won, it would be an upset.

Not gonna happen. Based on what I have heard and seen, I don't know how Fort played Broadway as tough as they did, even with Broadway's QB out.

I thought you were basing your post on the MidSchool kids that masquerade as sports writers for the Daily News Record...until I reread your post. Now, that wouldn't surprise me at all. ( FWIW I think the News-Leader's people are head, shoulders and feet better than anything the News-Record has!)

FWIW, the Page News and Courier does use actual MidSchool kids in that publication's pick'ems (this year she's a 7th grader, last year's boy was an 8th grader) who know and understand athletics far better than the DN-R people do.

I saw and noticed it too. Sometimes I wonder if the prognosticators try to move up in the "standings" later in the year by picking upsets. That's certainly not where I would have gone against the grain if I wanted to move up. The overall quality of the sports section continues to decline. A lot of times there's no roundup of state college games on Sunday, no listing of all state high school scores, etc. But every time I tell my father that the Staunton paper is worse than the Waynesboro, he disagrees quite violently.
I always look here for Longtime's write up on the Riverheads game so I at least know what really happened in one game. The News Leaders writeups are hit or miss, depending on who was assigned to what game.

The DNR as well as WHSV continue to disappoint. PAWFAN has it right. These middle school kid mentality reporters make me sick. Since when did news become "Let's see what are viewers are saying on Facebook". Ridiculous. BTW ... Fort did grab a huge upset over the Streaks a few years back .. won't happen tonight though!

Granted, I don't know a whole lot about DNR but in SAW we used to have some pretty solid local sports news, but I feel it has gone way down. The News Virginian sports coverage was REALLY good when Sacco and Sisk were there, and the Newsleader provided some good coverage as well when Chris Lassiter and that crew was there. I always thought Hubert Grim was a little odd, but I feel the newsleader is really missing him now. I'm glad Patrick Hite is back, he typically provides some good stuff. WHSV has gone down since the 2 new guys have taken over (I dont know the other guy's name but the one is Deguzman). I feel like the folks covering this stuff now (particularly the Endzone) have no love for the sports they are covering and it shows in the product. The endzone used to be significantly better than it is now, and I'm afraid they are going to do away with it eventually due to it declining in quality. WHSV news in general irritates me, as I feel they should cover more local stuff involving the community/students/activities/athletics instead of letting us know what the weather is every 5 minutes and reporting the DC pro sports.

DNR stands for a couple of things; (1) Do Not Resusitate, or in this case (2) Do Not Read
