Gate City vs Hampton (TN) Benefit Game

The Blue Devils faced Hampton tonight at their place for a benefit game. Hampton started out hot and took an early lead scoring 33 pts in the first quarter and shooting nearly 75% from the field. Hampton led 33-20 at the end of the first. GC finally picked up pace and the Devils held a 47-41 lead at halftime. McClung and Ervin both had 21 pts at halftime and Dean (Freshman) contributed the other remaining 5 pts.

GC maintained their lead after halftime and ended the 3rd up 66-61. Then in the 4th the Devils put up 23 pts and held Hampton to only 12 and stretched the lead to 16 pts to win by the final score of 89-73.

McClung finished with 35 pts, Ervin had 33, and Dean scored 18 pts in his freshman debut. Those 3 players for GC scored 86 of their 89 pts. The Devils are gonna need more help from supporting cast and guys off the bench if they are gonna make any waves this year. Nice win against a good Hampton team though nevertheless.

Edit* Hampton made the state semis last year in Tennessee and brought back alot of their team this year. Hampton was much better than I thought.

Hampton is always a good team and always a very good team at home. Gate City may play the most difficult non-conference schedule in 2A Basketball?

Its definitely a tough non-conference schedule thats for sure. It's front loaded heavily with stout competition.

Is Gate City playing in the Arby's Classic this year?

Yea they are the only team from VA playing in the Classic this year. They managed to draw Wings Academy out of the Bronx for their opener....first time theyve competed in the Arbys. I seen where Wings won a tournament in New York where alot of the big name teams play so they should be pretty legit.
