Girls Hoops Preview: Robert E. Lee

STAUNTON — There are a lot of unknowns about the Robert E. Lee girls basketball team this season.
But one thing that head coach Josh McElheny says is for sure — the Lee Ladies will not be boring.
“We are at least going to be entertaining to watch,” he said. “The future for this group is bright. It just might take a while for all the lights to come on.”
Lee graduated seven seniors and more than 82 percent of their scoring from a team that went 9-17 and fell to George Mason in the Region 2A West quarterfinals last year.
Now, behind three returning players, the Lee Ladies hope to use a fast-paced, up-tempo attack to see success.
“Go as fast as possible on both ends,” McElheny said. “Take chances and create turnovers on defense and shoot the ball on offense before we turn it over.”
Lee’s biggest returner is junior Lexi Hall, who was arguably the team’s best player during her freshman season before sitting out a majority of the 2016-2017 campaign with knee issues.
Hall is joined by senior Ciniya Crawford and sophomore Sam Glick as the only three returners.
Crawford averaged 2.5 points per game last season while Glick put up 3.3.
Those three players are joined by seven newcomers from the JV team to round out this year’s roster.
“There have been a lot of questions and a lot of learning,” McElheny said of the preseason progress.
Lee opened the season Tuesday night against Fort Defiance and will now be off until Tuesday, Dec. 5, when it hosts Shenandoah District opponent East Rockingham at home.
“We will get better as the year goes,” McElheny said. “We are very athletic and will be able to run up and down the floor.”
