LEBANON, Va. – The Virginia High Bearcats not only ended Lebanon’s seven-game winning streak on Friday night with a 57-45 girls basketball victory over the Pioneers, they also grabbed sole possession of first place in the Southwest District.
“A big game, this was a statement game, the girls wanted it,” said Virginia High coach Kevin Timmons. “We took a loss to Lebanon earlier in the year in our tournament and we talked about growth, seeing if we had grown since then. Tonight, we showed we had grown some as a team.”
The game was about as tight as you can get in the first half.
The largest lead was six points by Lebanon in the first quarter and there were six lead-changes.
Taylor Owens made a basket for Virginia High (6-7, 4-0) to give the Bearcats a 21-20 advantage at halftime.
After committing five turnovers in the first half, Lebanon (12-3, 2-1) had 13 miscues in the se-cond half as the suffocating full-court pressure by Virginia High was hard for the Pioneers to overcome.
The Bearcats held Lebanon to only seven points in the third quarter, as their 21 points equaled their total from the first half. Taylor Owens had 11 of her 27 points as the Cats extended their lead to 42-27 entering the third quarter.
“Taylor has been playing great,” Timmons said. “She has been finding the rim. We have a good group of guards that know how to make a play. Taylor and Jada Campbell have been com-ing along the last four or five games.”
Lebanon scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to cut the Bearcat lead to seven points, but could get no closer. Forced to foul with time running off the clock, Virginia High cemented the win with an 11-of-14 performance from the foul line down the stretch.
“We wanted to let everyone know that we are still Virginia High,” Timmons said. “We still play tough-nosed defense, we still run the floor, we’ve lost some games this year, but we always want to compete for the district championship. We wanted to let everyone know, we’re still around.”
Kara Long led the Pioneers with 15 points. Averie Price (12 points) and Madison Varney (10 points) also had solid games.
“We turned the ball over in the second half and it led to a lot of layups from them,” said Leba-non coach Rex Parker. “We dug ourselves such a big hole, we never could get back. We didn’t do anything to help ourselves win the game tonight.”
The Bearcats held a 36-28 rebounding advantage with Taylor Owens clearing eight boards.
Ale Sydnor had six points and eight boards, while Jada Campbell added 12 points, five re-bounds and three assists. Amaya Lee stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, five steals, five as-sists and four rebounds.
