Game 1: Dee Cvetnich goes for 17 points and 22 rebounds and defending state champion Central - Wise Lady Warriors open their new campaign with 56-38 victory over Rye Cove.

Game 2: Lady Warriors get the win in the first round of the PVNB tournament over Graham, 75-31 - move on to play Union Friday in the semis.

Tournament host Wise Central overcame a slow start to pull away to a 75-31 win over the Graham G-Girls at the UVa.-Wise Prior Convocation Center.

Graham (0-5) kept things close for the first three minutes of the game, but Central pulled away from that point.

“I thought we shot the ball pretty well. We were able to play a lot of people, and the people off the bench played well for us,” said Central coach Robin Dotson. “It’s early and we’ve still got a lot to work on. Our defense needs to get better.”

Central’s Gracie Mullins topped the 1,000-point mark for her career in the game. She finished the night with 21 points, while Dee Cventich added 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Warriors (2-0). Brook Porter added 12 points and Hannah Carter contributed 10 points. Olivia Mullins added six assists for Central.

McKenzie Riffe led Graham with 16 points and nine rebounds.

In other action, Union cruised to a 58-17 victory over Jenkins, Ky., while Ridgeview blasted East Ridge, Ky. 59-38. In the closest game of the night, Shelby Valley, Ky., beat Rye Cove 55-46.

Union scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back on the way to a big win.

The game was the first of the season for the Lady Bears.

“As a coach you always worry about that first game. I thought we came out with a lot of energy and made a lot of hustle plays and really set the tone. I felt like we just had a complete team effort tonight. We’ve got nine girls on the team, and I felt like all nine girls gave us great minutes,” said Union coach Kory Bostic.

Defense played a big role in the victory for Union. The Lady Bears recorded 22 steals, taking advantage of 29 Jenkins turnovers.

“We really stressed playing on the defensive end, and I felt like we came out and played solid half-court defense. And I felt like our press was pretty solid. When you got five players on the floor who are hustling and diving on the floor, you’re going to make some plays,” said Bostic.

Union’s Abigail Webb outscored the entire Jenkins’ squad with a game-high 18 points. The Lady Bears got nine points and 10 rebounds from Heather Lipps, while Ashley Chester pulled down 11 rebounds.

Jenkins (1-3) got seven points and 11 rebounds from Lala Watts.

Shelby Valley (4-0) kept its record perfect on the young season with its win over Rye Cove (0-3).

The Lady Wildcats picked up the win despite a 29-point effort from Rye Cove’s Lexie Rhoten. Abigail Roller finished with 11 rebounds and five assists.

Shelby Valley had a more balanced attack with 12 points from Cassidy Wright and 10 points and eight rebounds from Kayla Newsome.

The two exchanged leads four times in the early going with the Lady Wildcats leading Rye Cove 34-27 at halftime. Shelby Valley outscored the Lady Eagles 21-19 in the second half to hold on for the win.

Shelby Valley advanced to tonight’s semifinals and will face Ridgeview.

The Wolfpack (2-0) got 23 points and eight rebounds from Bailey Frazier and 19 points from Nicole Counts to take a big win over East Ridge (3-2).

Sarah Tackett led East Ridge in scoring with 13 points and nine rebounds.

East Ridge led 9-8 in the first quarter. But Ridgeview outscored the Lady Warriors 20-9 in the second period to build a 28-18 advantage at halftime.

The Wolfpack controlled the second half to pull away for the win.

Have to remember though, we've only been in existence... this makes our third year. We won it all in 2016, after most of those girls won it all in 2015 with 1A Clintwood. Went to state QF last year. Frazier has these Dickenson County girls playing ball at a very young age much like Dotson at Central.

It's a very heated rivalry indeed. You won't see a more intense girls basketball rivalry than Ridgeview/Central. :)

The closest comparison I can make is Spotswood Girls vs East Rock girls or TA Girls - all these kids know one another and grew up together, being from the same area.
