Mountain 7 girls title game, after one quarter: Wise County Central 10, Ridgeview 9

M7 championship game, At the half, it's Lady Wolfpack 19 Wise Central 17

Ridgeview with a strong 3rd quarter so far.. have pulled the Pack out to a 31-24 lead over Wise Central with 2 minutes left in 3rd

4:00 left 4th quarter, Ridgeview still leads Wise Central 42-30 in M7 girls championship

Final - Ridgeview defeats Wise Central 49-36 in M7 girls championship

I have a feeling they will be meeting again down the road - where the stakes will be much higher.

Yep, that's the only thing that bugs me about winning this one in particular, is it doesn't mean anything really in the grand scheme of things. Regional seeds had already been determined and whatnot.

Some observations:

1. That place was packed Friday night. Pretty impressive for a girls game. Though Wise Central's visiting side is deplorable seating wise.

2. Found it hilarious that during the consolation game, that Central fans were cheering Abingdon and Ridgeview fans were cheering Union. The rivalry between Ridgeview and Union so far has been a very friendly one, and Mr. James Mitchell sit on the Ridgeview side Friday night where he was welcomed with open arms. Will the rivalry stay friendly? It'll sure be tested probably over the next couple of years, especially in football where they will probably battle for the district championship.

3. If Union and Central play in the semis, which I believe they will, I hope Union takes them out and ends their season.

You're right, the RV/Union rivalry is a friendly, competitive one like Richlands whereas Union and Central DESPISE each other. It's gotten bad at times. I know everyone in the M7 hates Central, but the Union/Wise rivalry is a step above even that.

Not being from that area and not totally familiar with rivalries down that way, why all the "hate" for Central?

Just curious.....

For most of the M7, it's a newer rivalry. Before consolidation, and I can only speak for Powell Valley, no one really viewed Wise as a threat. Wise's rival was Norton foremost and then Pound. But after consolidation, the biggest factor for most schools is/was the behavior of the Central boys basketball staff during games and in general. Physical altercations with referees, all the yelling and screaming, some instances of dirty play during games (McClung being undercut on a dunk was a big example), all of those really made the rest of the conference dislike them.
The attitudes displayed by some from Wise also rubbed people the wrong way. Their arrogance is silly and there have been instances of racially charged situations between Wise and Norton foremost. Kinda like Duke, the way they play and the way they carry themselves can be off-putting.

And seeing how Wise is the hub of Wise County schools, there's a lot of perceived bias that happens. It seems if any dispute or decision is involving Wise, they most often are viewed as being favored.
