Girls State Semifinal: Mathews vs Riverheads Updates

31-17, Riverheads at the half. Lady Gladiators are very patient and move the ball around well

60-39 Final. Riverheads advances to the state championship

Thanks for hitting the highlights. The Lady Gladiators came out firing from long range in this one, hitting four three pointers in the first quarter to build that double digit lead. I assume they all came from the hot hands of Hannah Grubb but remember I was watching on a four-inch screen, so I can't be sure.

However things were not all rosy for RHS as their aggressiveness on defense put them in serious foul trouble very early in the game. They had the Lady Devils on the bonus by the two minute mark of the first quarter and by halftime at least 15 team fouls had been called on the visitors. Making that even more potentially troublesome was the fact that three of those were against Grubb and two against the Gladiators' inside presence Berkeley Tyree.

If Mathews had been able to hit consistently from the line, they would have had enough opportunities to keep themselves in the game but fortunately for Riverheads they connected on a low percentage, allowing the Gladiators to keep the lead in double digits the rest of the way.

As you might expect, the Gladiators backed off on the defensive pressure in the second half and as a result, they were whistled for only one foul in the third quarter. Conversely, the fouls against Mathews started to pile up, all of which allowed Riverheads to pad the lead. Grubb stroked two more triples early in the fourth as the lead ballooned to 58-30 before the RHS subs finished out the game.

For a change I had no complaints about the stream. Making the viewing even more comfortable was the fact that the camera shot focused constantly on the actual scoreboard. So all in all, this was one of my better viewing experiences of the season. Speaking of viewing, it also sounded from the broadcast that a respectable number of Gladiator fans made the long trip, and if anything, they seemed to outcheer the home folks.

Next up for Riverheads will be some history in the making as the Lady Gladiators will advance to the school's first-ever state final in girls basketball. (The boys made it once in 2004.) They will travel again and will face the winner of tonight's George Wythe/Honaker game. The bus driver might be secretly pulling for GW in that one, since I doubt if any Gladiator fans (myself included) have any idea in the world where Honaker is, whereas GW would be at least a somewhat manageable trip.

As for the "when" part of that, Ma Nature may have more to say about that than anyone. So let's sit back and see what she has in store for us over the next day or two and go from there.

Congrats to the Lady Gladiators for making history today and good luck in the finals!!!!

I see now that Honaker and GW were apparently not even scheduled to play until Thursday night. But with snow expected for pretty much the whole state any minute now, who knows what the schedule will be for the final two games?
