Forrest Shuey ripped a bases-clearing double to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth to break open a close game and propel Riverheads to an impressive shutout over the Bulldogs on a chilly, rainy afternoon in Greenville. The victory evens the Big Red's district record at 2-2 and raises their overall mark to 3-2.
The Gladiators had just scored the first run of the game on a fielding error after struggling against the Bulldog starter (# 13, Josh or Jeremy something?? We didn't have our regular announcer today), who held the home team scoreless and pretty much hitless until that big inning. But Shuey's big base knock opened the floodgates and the Gladiators plated three more runs on a couple of Bulldog errors.
Even though the Big Red won impressively with that 7-run inning, it was actually the visiting Dogs who had the first serious threat of the game. In the top of the fourth a hit batter and a misjudged fly ball put Dogs on second and third with only one out. They went on to load the bases but Gladiator starter Elijah Dunlap got a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
Following the Gladiators' big inning, he was relieved by Michael Robertson in the sixth and a third Gladiator pitcher (sorry-name escapes me) looked as impressive as the first two as the Bulldogs went quietly once RHS took the wind out of their sails.
I believe this was Luray's first district loss, so they have plenty of time to still make some noise or play spoiler in the district. Riverheads' next action will be Friday, weather-permitting as they travel in to Staunton to tackle the Fighting Leemen.
