Quick review here because of the lateness of the hour and also because I did not stay for the entire scrimmage. But the Big Red dominated the private school Barons from across the mountain today. They played two full quarters first, which ended with RHS on top 34-7. Each team then got 10 untimed downs and the Gladiators scored again.
After a break, I understand they were going to play the same amount all over again, but I left midway through the next quarter with RHS ahead 14-0 so I cannot say for sure how long they played or how long it lasted.
Riverheads stuck with its usual ground game and from what we can tell so far, the Big Red will have as many as 5 or 6 interchangeable backs this season. They have a couple of small quick ones who use their low center of gravity to their advantage to find holes, and they also have a couple of hard-charging, tougher backs, one of whom didn't even play today.
They even experimented with the passing game and Tyler Smith connected with Drew Bond for one of the first half scores. So they might be "just" strong enough through the air this season to keep the defenses honest.
As for Blue Ridge, they were very small in numbers, as they didn't bring more than 20-22, although their printed roster had more than that. They scored their touchdown through the air from about 20 yards out after getting a deflected 37 yard pass a few plays before that.
Regular season opener for RHS will have them hosting Bath County next Friday before traveling to Stuarts Draft on the 8th.
