Glass Coach?

why are we different here at Spotsylvania high school? when other schools in the area need a coach they never have the same problem we have here: hiring freeze, hiring with in etc. in two years woody has went from Brookeville to monticello and now possibly glass and these others schools go out and get good coaches and don't seem to have trouble finding them a job at the new school. the county just to the north of us Stafford in the last 10 years hired hall of fame coaches to their programs and before too long that excellent coach at N Stafford joe mangano will be added to imo the best coaches in the state in the commonwealth dist. someone please explain? maybe wikki you have a good answer?

Boils down to some combination of school board, superintendent, principal and athletic director. You can have a top notch booster organization willing to provide whatever it takes but, if you don't have folks that are supportive in the positions identified they can kill a potential hire pretty quickly. The reason all four are mentioned is that no two communities may be alike. In some communities the super and school board may not involve themselves to that level while in others there may not be a formal AD or the principal may delegate to their AD. My experience has been areas that have a problem attracting a good coach generally have an administration problem while areas that have a problem keeping good coaches have a community problem.

Cutnjump, great explanation, you hit the nail on the head, Spotsy for sure has an administrator problem. I was told Spotsy had 3 parents sit in during the interview process, none of the parents really have a great knowledge of football, which is fine, the problem I was told is that all 3 parents liked the interview of one of the applicants but the principal keep saying, "Ya, but Coach Johnson" he was the coach that the principal brought in last year and knew he was gonna be the new head coach from the jump, yes Johnson was out casted by the former head coach, but as a coach you are there to do a job, Johnson arrived to practice late and left early many of the days? Until the parents do something about the administration at Spotsylvania the same ol stuff will continue. Nobody wants to touch Spotsylvania with a no name unproven coach, and you mark my words, Johnson will have a hard time hiring assistant coaches and the players will end up with the same staff as last year.

Back when Timmy left the principal before Davis his name was Ehselman came to our boosters club and told us to appoint someone from the club to set in on the interview process. we appointed Deb Johnson and she did so. two years after that Davis came from Riverbend to be the principal. after 2 years at spotsy he replaced matthias as head coach as he brought lawrynas back to spotsy and told myran he had to take him back as a assistant. he replaced Matthias and when it came to interviewing for the new coaching job the boosters appointed me as one to set in on the interviews and ask questions to the applicants. well we had over 30 apply for the job and I asked Davis when we were going to start interviewing the applicants and he informed me it wasn't going to be handled like the last principal did. he and the ad only would handle it. they never interviewed one person and handed the job to the person that he told mytthis to take back as a assistant from Riverbend Ben lawryans. it sound like what you are saying is true. I have posted here many times that until the entire administration out there is replaced nothing will change. they needed to replace the entire staff and start over new. you are probably correct they may have the same coaching staff back. I have been told they wan't Matthias to coach out there again as he still teaches at spotsy. this would help Johnson and add some experience to the staff but I was told he was leaning toward staying at courtland.
now I have said it on here before. no matter what we think as a fan parent Davis has not done anything wrong. he can do what he did and when he sends a recommendation to the school board he has the right to pick who he wants. if the board approves it than so be it. I am going to give Johnson a fair chance and hope we get a diamond in the rough. all good coaches have to start somewhere. if there is no improvement in the program after 3 years than Davis cant let him linger on like the last coach. a change needs to be made. you make some good valid points but you haven't told me anything I didn't know!

Gotta applaud you Skynard for providing real insight into the process but, Spotsy is not an appealing job right now. Coach Coleman saw the writing on the wall and made good. Loudoun County has more $ coming in than any other and still there has not been a stipend raise since.......yeah seems like forever. Every job opening up in Loudoun County is attracting top notch coaches from around the country who are astonished with the immovable red tape that turns people off or leads the ones hired to struggle. I don't pretend to know your district but, what I do know is you have to back the people hired and many of those are the assistants that live in, work in, and teach in the district you live in. You have said this and I agree with you. There are so many talented assistant coaches that need a chance and man none of them will be Tim Coleman or Mickey Thompson but........they could be Matt Griffis or Eric Ludden. Trust that the assistant coaches from winning programs understand the formula for winning. Too many administrators are looking for a golden goose when all they need to do is throw support behind the right gosling. Not saying your guy is the right or wrong guy but WHO KNOWS?

Woody it is...

I have a feeling he was put in a position to want to look for another job... Was supposed to deliver with the plethora of talent that Monticello had and didn't deliver...Just my thoughts...

Re: Woody it is...

I think you hit it, I heard it wasn't a good fit and the Glass job was available

Re: Woody it is...

Word has it that since the AD Barnes left, Monticello internally has been pretty anti-football.

That's a shame. They have some good athletes and great facilities. and how can you be anti-football?!?! Just un-American lol. When a football team is rolling, the atmosphere throughout the school feeds off it. The same can be said for the other sports too, but I have always found the impact to be greater with football.

Welp, just got wind that that talented Monticello JV RB is
transferring to Albemarle, along with about 6 other players. And boom
goes the dynamite.

Watch out for the Patriots.

Re: Woody it is...

Ok, so I addressed the transfer issue in the above thread, no need to readdress it here. As far as the "anti-football" sentiment, I can tell you that this is not true. As Keith said, you would have to be a complete fool to attack your number one revenue source, even if you aren't a football fan (which isn't the case at all- our administrators are physically and verbally supportive of our program and can been seen in multiple ways)

Sometimes tough changes that have to be made, for the benefit of the entire program, can be hard for people that are used to a certain way to stomach. Usually there are two responses to those changes: roll with the changes, adapt, and overcome or seek employment elsewhere. Both are viable options and depending on your circumstances either can be the right answer. You may not like the changes that are happening, but in no way do these changes make something "anti-anything."

Coaches and players may leave the program. It happens in every program at one point or another and these folks make their decisions based how they perceive the facts and circumstances. I don't begrudge anyone (coaches) for making a decision that they feel will improve their families or professional situation, but don't throw around sweeping generalizations based on speculations and rumors.

What changes are being made at Monticello?

I'm now hearing that football doesn't even have a lifting schedule yet, they've been struggling to secure time for the weight room. Sounds anti-football to me.

Re: Woody it is...

WPO2 Alum, the changes are not radical or sinister. They are the normal changes that you would expect when the administration changes and a new regime comes in.

Re: Woody it is...

Hoosfan, you need to change your sources. They are feeding you bad intel. We have a lifting schedule, have had a lifting schedule since the New Year began and we have 100% attendance in either off season lifting or Spring Sports participation for every single player returning off our Varsity Football Roster. Great things are happening here at MHS! I invite you come by and visit anytime you would like to get the CORRECT information about Monticello Football. We are busting our buts Monday through Thursday from 4-5:30pm. Pull around back in the athletic parking lot (behind the Gym), be glad to walk you through what we do around here. You aren't going to like it though, because you will realize that we aren't going anywhere and it will be business as usual on Friday nights next season (same as in every season)! Were young in spots, but we are going be dominant in spots and I can't wait to see what this squad looks like on the field next season!

Good luck to all, see you on the field next season!
