Great article on stranger high school mascots

Liked the article and photo icons of the mascots. Didn't realize the Poca, WV Dots were still in existence. The Bramwell Millionaires are history in WV I think. Worked many years ago with a fellow from Centralia, ILL whose team was mentioned with Orphans being their mascot.
Jordan Beetdiggers, a very good football school out west wins my vote and they aren't even on here.

Fluvanna wins according to them.....

I used to like the Lexington Scarlett Hurricanes

Lexington became the Scarlet Hurricanes when Pete Brewbaker became their head coach in the late 1930's. Before that they were the "Goatranchers".. not lying.

And Bramwell was absorbed into Montcalm if I remember correctly.

Warwick High used to be named Morrison High and their named was the Farmers.

There used to be a high school in Maryland named Andover and their nickname was the Archers. I always liked that one.

Wasn't Lexington the "Scarlet Hurricane" without the s?

WV has had some good ones. The Smoot Smokies was one of my favorites, although they were too small to play football (now part of Greenbrier West). The Gary Coaldiggers was a good one too. Marlinton High School were the Copperheads, another pretty original name.

I've seen it written both ways, but I think you're right that the S is not supposed be there.

Some more cool WV names I like were the Ceredo-Kenova "Wonders", The Clay-Battelle "Cee Bee's", and the Parkersburg "Big Reds". My favorite has to be the "Red Terror" of Glenville High.

I think Man (WV) had the hillbillies, which was not too far fetched for that part of the country.
One of my favorites was the Saltville Shakers.
Before there was a Giles High, there was a team in Pembroke called either the Cornhuskers or Cornshuckers IIRC. Two other schools, from Eggleston and Newport were consolidated but I have no idea what their mascots might have been.

I read somewhere that Pembroke was the "Corncutters" before they consolidated with the Pearisburg Red Devils to form Giles High. Giles retained the Columbia Blue from Pembroke and Red from Pearisburg. Eggleston and Newport fielded baseball teams, but I don't believe either had football.

West Point Pointers, Chincoteague Ponies, Annandale Atoms, and Colonial Beach Drifters should get honorable mention, but Flying Flucos is by far the best.

Why are there so many Tigers, Eagles, and Falcons? A good mascot should be uniquely relevant to the local community, like Madison County Mountaineers, Spotswood Trailblazers, Poquoson Islanders, or Randolph-Henry Statesmen.
