The Green Run Spring/Summer League is more than halfway through with the Tournament play set to start in two weeks. Here's a look at how things are going with a recent report from this past Monday's action...
Kellam 59, First Colonial 44: In a battle for second place, the Kellam Knights seized control by grabbing a 32-25 half-time lead and cruised the rest of the way. Rising senior point guard Janai Raynor-Powell set the pace, finishing with a team-high 11 points. The Knights also got steady contributions from rising senior 6-foot-5 forward Chase Carroll as well as Noah Singer and Chris Schulz, both from the Class of 2016. In defeat for FC, guard Brandon Schlick put in a game-high 15 points on 8-of-9 shooting at the foul line, and backcourt mate Marvin Trotman III (Class of 2016) added 13 points.
Cox 43, Princess Anne 33: After racing out to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, the Cox Falcons suddenly found themselves trailing by a count of 26-24 after a 20-13 run by the Cavaliers of Princess Anne. A 7-0 run by Cox - keyed by the multi-sport trio of Jordan Williams (2017), Cole Johnson (2016) and Critt Johnson (2015). Cole finished with 12 points and Williams added 10, going 6-of-11 at the charity stripe. Quevon Jackson, a 5-foot-8 rising junior guard, scored a team-high 10 points for the Cavs.
Bayside 33, Tallwood 30: With four rising ninth graders playing significant minutes, the Bayside Marlins notched a close win over the Tallwood Lions. Bayside led 21-14 at the half with 5-foot-10 guard Toddlin Jenkins (Class of 2015) leading their offense. Jenkins had 12 points by game's end. Armani Chatman (6-foot-tall) and Dajour Rucker (6-foot-3), two freshmen that'll likely play key roles on varsity next season, also made an impact in the win. Tallwood got 11 points from 6-foot-1 rising senior swingman Dalon McHugh.
Salem 64, Ocean Lakes 56: In a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair, the Salem SunDevils outlasted the Ocean Lakes Dolphins with underclassmen playing a large part in their success. Besides the 15 points from rising senior guard Treyvon Trent, the SunDevils received 14 points from Trevon 'T.J.' Taylor chipped in 14 points, converting shots from the outside and throwing down an impressive jam. Both Taylor and fellow Class of 2017 prospect Brandon Mitchell corralled a handful of rebounds as well. For Ocean Lakes in the loss, guard Vince Contreras (2016) had 16 points and consistently got in the lane.
New Coaches in the Fold: The League features a pair of teams with new coaches. Princess Anne is under the direction of Tim Sparks, a former assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College that is familiar with the Beach District having been an assistant before at both Green Run and Salem. Meanwhile, the lone private school participating, Greenbrier Christian, hired Donald Hand this off-season. Hand played his College Basketball at UVA. Only two of Greenbrier's losses have been by double-figures with the other two by a total of three points.
At the Top: Just like Maury in its Summer League, Green Run is protecting its home court and currently undefeated, despite graduating their top three scorers from a season ago in Tyler Blount (New Mexico JC), Jamaal Matin (Mount Olive) and Edward Gordon. Rising 6-foot-4 junior forward Sterling Carrington has been a factor both scoring and rebounding, while Kempsville transfer De'Shaun Wade (Class of 2017) has flashed some serious potential in the backcourt, serving as the catalyst in a comeback win over First Colonial.
