Hayfield back in the playoffs...maybe not

But importing two dozen players changes the calculus. I am old school. You win or lose with YOUR kids...the ones who go to YOUR school...who live in YOUR neighborhood.

If you want to assemble an all-star team and play on ESPN, fine. Just don't do it while you are a VHSL member.
He is wining or losing with HIS kids. This team is made up of a majority of kids he coached since they were kids at PME. They just followed their coach.

My last time on the subject.
I’ve never had any problem with his kids following him. My dad sent me 40 minutes everyday to play for a coach in high school so I could get a chance to get looks. My only problem with anything has how their staff went about it. Gotta be smart and they haven’t always made good decisions. With that being said, if they’re gonna win, make it count and be legendary. Gotta avg 100+ after all the stuff they’ve been through.

Rec league culture is all this is honestly. Hopefully they grow from this and stop putting the spotlight on themselves. Just keep being great men to the kids and push them to the next level.

Anything they have been through is self inflicted by their own disregard of the rules and lack of understanding and appreciation of sportsmanship and fair play, in my opinion.

I'd like to see these tough-talking VA schools grow a pair and actually schedule. There's a lot of half-assed "tough" scheduling because the reality is all these schools know deep down their place in HS football across the country and are scared of being humbled. OS is the only team who's ever had a true pair and went out and scheduled like grown men. Of course, all the other coaches saw what happened and went right back to their tiny worlds and tiny dreams.

Maybe but some people are acting like it’s bigger than it really is. The Overton brothers just want to see these kids do good and the kids believe in them
Football is great for teaching and molding young men and showing them the value of teamwork and hard work. But what are the coaches, administrators, and all of the adults who support them teaching them in this case? Rules can be disregarded, overlooked, and ignored, because the end justifies the means. This win at all costs attitude has no place in high school sports. HS football isn't perfect, but it's the last bastion of pure sport we have.

The NFL long ago sold out to the almighty dollar. Sold to the highest bidder. College football, during my childhood, was still mostly pure. The pageantry, the traditions, the rivalries, it was all so grand. Now the money has perverted most of what was good about football. Gone are a lot of rivalries and traditions, sold out to big media conglomerates with $$ signs in their eyes and greed in their hearts. Money has perverted the NCAA, the conferences, the schools, and the players. How much money can we get from media rights deals, getting more of our teams in the CFP, and how much can I get for NIL? Hitting the transfer portal and playing 6,7,8 years for self.

I fell in love with HS football over 35 years ago. I still love so much about it. But I see the invasion of super teams and the win at all costs mentality creeping in ever so quickly. The question I have is, if I were 13 all over again would I fall in love with HS football?

Ok? So if he stayed at Freedom with these same players and got the two transfers (qb and wr) would you say all this?

I think if the players that Freedom had the last 2 years were acquired in the same manner as the guys to Hayfield, then the VHSL should have treated Freedom the same way. I don't think the VHSL is blameless in all of this mess. If they would have acted 2 years ago, then we wouldn't be embroiled in this mess now. The precedent should actually have been set with John Marshall even before that.

Sooooo......just a simple question here. Let's say FCPS decides to part ways with DO aftr this years probable State Champ appearance...and he lands the HC position at Warwick and brings his hired hands to NN and hangs 50+ on the P next season....you still OK with his "style"? Let's be honest, if he shows up with those 14 kids to add to the Wick roster, Phantoms are in trouble. seriously. And so is Maury....

Yes, absolutely. Overton did the same thing at Freedom but PWCS is a bit more lax than FCPS (from what I understand) when it comes to transfers and everyone sort of turned a blind eye. They were mostly (not all) PW kids who did not cross county lines to play for him. And he never got so many all at the exact same time.

I’ve never said what DO is doing is the right thing. I’ve said a few times that there were reckless….HOWEVER, if he was in the 757 or the 804, you wouldn’t be hearing all this privileged, participation trophy crying about transfers. John Marshall been getting cats from all over (way worst than Hayfield), small town Hopewell makes sure they play them every year (just an example)… Since the VHSL has allowed Hayfield to play and DO to coach, I hope they make the best out of it and blow everybody out. It’s been a lot of crazy talk from coaches up in NoVA. I don’t agree with the “Twitter fingers” that Hayfield’s staff does, but those opposing coaches/parents/students have talked CRAAAAZY to Hayfields players and staff. Let your results on the field speak for itself though.

Bo, you have consistently posted on here about setting the example and developing young men to be adults and make appropriate decisions, then you say "I hope they make the best out of it (VHSL rules and doing what you can to look the other way when it comes to personal ethics) and blow everybody out"?

Reread my statement on the C6 boards. I think I’ve made my stance clear. I’ve never been against their players going to play for their coach. To be clear, my problem has been with the way their staff have conducted themselves on social media and the extra antics. They’ve been negligent in many ways.. Staff members smoking with student athletes, star athlete arrested for gun, and the way their staff has been arrogant at times. That’s not conducive of teaching young men to be productive citizens. Hands down! Now if these transfers have been cleared by FCPS’s residency compliance office then them “violating the VHSL” is nothing but conjecture. “Innocent until PROVEN guilty”..

Wow, I didn’t realize staff members were smoking with the athletes and the star athlete was arrested for gun reasons. That’s horrible

I think you and I agree on this topic.....Dinwiddie is a PRIME example. They RELOAD every year. I'd take that coaching staff in a heartbeat. Their system is PROVEN, not "bought"...or imported.
Where I came from, we called it "Run what you BRUNG"...if it wasn't good enough, get better, but that didn't mean go the free agent route.

That’s why I respect Billy Mills to the highest degree. IF he was to bring a kid in from Petersburg, Brunswick or wherever else he’s been accused of.. He’s molding them into productive members of society and sending them to college. IF I had a son and lived in Richmond, I’d drive my son 40 minutes to play for him. I’m just making him as an example and am no way saying he’s brought anyone in. Coaches like Mills, Vern Lunsford, Dave Bedwell, Charles Scott (YEP I SAID IT), Loren Johnson, Tom Hall, Jeremy Blunt, Ricky Irby.. They do things the right way and make these boys into men.

I’ve never met Coach Mills, but from what I hear and have seen out of him on videos on YouTube of the football team I can feel the love he has for the community and his team. Seems like a great man

I think Overton got most of the transfers into Freedom through a magnet school program.

It’s so great when you have a coach that serves as not just a football coach, but a great example for players as human beings as well. Personally I used to work with someone at a part time job I worked while in college that played football for Coach Beale that used to coach at Floyd County. My coworker told me that he still talks to Coach Beale every day on the phone. That’s when you know you build special relationships with the players. I thought that was awesome when I heard that. I’ve always heard nothing but great things about Coach Beale.

Let’s face it, virtually no high school player is ever going to make a living playing football. But all of them will be out here in the working world one day. And I can tell you from first hand experience, the young men that spend their high school years under Coach Mills are ready to make their way in this brutal world. I have not heard a single small business man than employed a former Billy Mills coached player that had anything but praise for their employee. I’ve got two working for me, and a close eye on another one. They have what we all businessmen want, right from day one. Work ethic, accountability, respectfulness, politeness, communication skills, common sense, the “find a way” approach to problem solving, embrace a challenge, don’t run from it, the ability to get along with a diverse group, and they always have a light heart with a good sense of humor. And they come to me physically tough and conditioned.

Coach Mills and his staff are doing what we want all teachers, coaches, and school leaders to do, assist parents in preparing our kids for real life.

Thank you Billy, you have helped make our community one of the best places in world to live.
