OH NO! Far from that simple. Not when there's teams like LT, KF, Monacan, Dinwiddie and you can add Lafayette into the mix and many others. I don't have dreams of a state championship. I'd just really like to see a coach and a staff come in and build a winner and stick around long term for a change. Take a look around the state, "most" successful programs have one thing in common, a solid staff that has been together for a long time.

From what I know about Smithfield, if they were running Wing T, they were wasting talent.

The right Coach can make all the difference between just making playoffs or being in the hunt for a state championship.

I know of a school that has been loaded with talent for about 5 or 6 years and they have never been a threat to win it all.

What's the actual history on coaches there, say over the last 10 years or so? Not names or records, just years at Smithfield?

This IS disappointing. I have been watching them from a distance and was putting them in second and third round of the playoffs next year.

Clark Harrell - Last three years, made some really big strides. I really liked the new look. Extremely disappointed that he's leaving. Wondering if just decided to head back to NC or were there other reasons.

Tyris Hill - Three years, forced out for reasons still not disclosed, out of coaching for two years, but landed a new gig in NC last year.

Chris Fraser - Six or seven years? Left for Charlottesville High after Dyrell Roberts graduated and headed to VT. He's now at Maury High.

Smithfield has a history of replacing people that question authority. If you aren't willing to tow the Admin's motto/line, you get dumped on.....even had a case a few years ago where a coach found out he had been fired only AFTER I asked him in town why he had stepped down, I saw the opening on the website...he was LIVID. No notice, no meeting, no warning. So yeah...nothing surprises me here in Hamtown....

The Packers return two of the most explosive players in the area next year, both will be Juniors, Donald King at RB and Chris Peirce at WR. King knows one speed, wide @$$ open, he NEVER goes down on the initial contact and just drags defenders 3 and 4 yards. HUGE HEART and can break the big oneat any moment. Pierce has amazing hands and leaping ability, coupled with his 6'-5" frame and exceptionally good speed, big things ahead. His body control was incredible last season. Had about 800 yards recieving last year also...so yeah, really disappointed...we were expecting a really good season next year.

You still might have that good team. Maybe you will get just the right coach and pick up where you left off.

Have you got a QB that can get the ball to the WR? Can King get open a catch a pass?

What the Achilles heel usually is in high school ball is the offensive line. Did you lose many O line starters to graduation?

Is that resturant still open at Rescue? The one down near the boat ramp by the bridge.

We actually had two sophomores that split time at QB last season, one was hurt toward the end of the season so Nick Turner got the starting nod the last 4 weeks and the playoff game. I think he averaged around 250 yards passing the last 4 games. King has great hands coming out of the backfield and he'll line up in a slot from time to time. King is incredibly talented. The old Bay Rivers District has had some really RB's over the years and he has two more years to vault himself close to the top of that pile. OL...I think we are losing two members, but we have a young beefy bunch moving up from a pretty good JV team. I think they'll gel quickly.

Whoever lands the job will be inhereting a good core group to build off of, those kids are hungry. I had heard that the weight lifting program was drawing 55-60 kids per day, where 12-15 years ago, maybe 25 per day. The hunger is there.

I think I was spoiled, I played for Roger Brookes at KW in the early 80's. There was never any guessing if he was coming back the next year. HE was Cavalier Football, he built that program.

It's all good...Packers will suit up and go toe to toe with whoever steps off the bus....

With a good solid group like that, you should attract a good coach, not just someone trying to start his coaching career. Hopefully this will be the one that changes everything, and will establish some longevity in the coaching ranks. I'll be curious to know what really went on that sent your coach down the road. It it is the fault of one particular person, that your coaches don't stay but about three years, it will be pretty hard to explain why he has chased two successful coaches away in six years if this one is successful, too.

But, you missed the really important question. The one about the restaurant in Rescue, at the bridge. Not that I like to eat or anything.

Along those lines, it's been years since I ate at Smithfield Station. What's the reputation for that restaurant like these days?

Oooops....forgot to answer that!

Not sure if you were aware of this but a number of years ago Captain Chuckamucks burned down. It took several years of wrangling with the freaking bureaucrats at the county offices to for Chuck to get it rebuilt. But he did rebuild and the food is just as good as ever. Great atmosphere. They serve a drink....Jet Fuel they call it, if you drink two, you better have a DD...LOL!

Smithfield Station is exceptional. Full house at all times. Their Sunday brunch brings in a huge crowd and dinner crowds are always large. Ron built a new set of shops beside the Station, it has a conference center as well. BIG change to the scenery.

Thanks, yeah, I guess the last time I was there it was the new building? Maybe five years ago? I remember the waitress telling me that Guy F. (Can't spell his last name), from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives had been there. Jet Fuel, huh. As little as I drink these days, after the first one I would probably look like the recent rocket launch over at Wallop's Island.

Back before the economy got so tough, my wife and I used to get out and go to neat places like Chuck's. I've eaten at Smithfield Station a bunch of times over the years. We even spent a couple of nights in the Lighthouse. We took the opportunity to walk around in the old town area, went to the museum, ate a little ice cream at the Shoppe across the street, all the usual touristy stuff. Had a great time. Good people in that area.

Isn't if funny how when you go somewhere and have a good experience, you begin to pull for their football team? I know that sounds weird, but I just love high school sports, and football in particular.

Maybe I owe Smithfield, Isle of Wight, Surry, and others something back anyway. In my younger years I sure caught enough fish off of their shores. They were good times back then.

I'll be watching your team this season. So keep us up to date on how things are going.

Funny that you would mention pulling for Smithfield, two years ago when you guys were making your State Title run, my son was in Afghanistan, his National Guard Unit is based out of Emporia and there are a lot of soldiers from Dinwiddie in that Unit, even the Unit CO (at the time)....I felt bad for them because they were 7500 miles away unable to come out to support you guys, so I was posting every article I could find about your Generals on the Units Facebook page....a lot of them really appreciated it. Rabid fans...gotta love it.

Chuck has a good thing going on down on the river. It's one of those places that if you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't know it was there! LOL!

First, let me say this, and I speak for the rest of my family, as well as the Dinwiddie community, thank you to your son and your family for the sacrifics and dedication you make to serve our country. There is no way I could ever find enough words to express my appreciation for what he and the rest of our men and women in uniform do to keep us safe. Please let him know this. If you or he, and your families, ever make it to a Dinwiddie game, you will be my personal honored guest.

I'll have to surprise my wife one day soon and drive her down to Chucks and have lunch.

Thanks for all of the info.

Thanks DP, he's pretty humble for a 24 year old. He left as a kid (in my eyes) and came back all man. It's amazing how much one tour can change a person. He takes his service very seriously and gets kind of uncomfortable if people make a positive fuss about it. I've told him only 2% of our country's citizen have worn any type of military uniform, it is a big deal. I am proud of him. He spent 9 months in the armpit of the universe, people don't know poverty, despair and lack of education until they've been THERE. I won't turn this into a political debate....because I'd end being banned for life from this board...Don't Tread On Me stuff.

My email is gwb16@yahoo.com give me a heads up if you all decide to head down this way. Work / life balance is a little stretched right now, but I'll make every effort to meet you. My wife never waffles when I say "Chuckamucks?" LOL!

Are you saying this because it is a school district rule? Other than local policy, there is no rule against this.

LOL! Great comeback...now that I KNOW the rest of story, he HAD to go....

And IF the change occurs that I think might be in the works. It'll be a GREAT change for the Packers.

IF the information I got over the weekend is correct, and I have NO REASON to not believe it to be true, it'll be a win-win scenario for the student athletes on Turner Drive!

I can't and won't get into specifics....just stay tuned.

I'm not nearly as upset as I was a few weeks ago...

It's easy to sense your enthusiasm. If it's the right thing for the kids, then it's always the right thing. Maybe what was feared to be a bad thing, will not be?

And, yes sir, we too, are stretched thinner than a slice of tomatoe on a Hardee's burger. But, somehow we must an opportunity to enjoy a meal together.

Please keep us informed as the situation evolves and can be made public.
