Head Coaching opportunities in Winchester area (JW and Handley)

I wonder if Todd Miller will look to be a head coach again. He has been an assistant at Handley under Simmons the last few years. He certainly has the resume, having led both Warren County (which was one win away from the state AA playoffs in 2006) and Skyline (for two years when it opened) in recent years. Or perhaps, Rick Lilly will bring in an outsider. It would not mean they would have to teach at Handley or Daniel Morgan Middle. Simmons taught at Quarles Elem.

As for James Wood, sorry to see Coach Mounts go. He has been one of the classiest and most likeable guys I have ever been around in baseball. He taught the game the right way, and when the guys listened they were successful. Sometimes it's hard to reach a certain group because they want to do things their way and not work as hard. I'm not sure coach Stiles will apply, but I am sure he would do a go job. Coach Hawes probably stayed around to help Jared, and his oldest son, John, was one of the best hitters ever to come through since the program was brought back in 1979.

What Woshner does from here, who knows. He's been quite the busy AD the last few months (filling football, still having openings in both basketball positions, and now baseball) but I hope they can bring someone in that shares the same values as Jared did. But as I said, it will be hard to follow such a good man and leader like Mounts.

The increasing pressure to be successful.

This has to be the most coaching changes in Frederick County High Schools sports at one time I have ever seen. Regardless of the many reason's given. Whether it is family, more money( LoudounCounty), etc... There is no doubt the pressure to be successful, is part of the equation for the departure of many of the changes that are coming to many of these schools in the Northwestern. If you are a coach to be, applying for one of these jobs, better bring your A game, nice guy or not, because if you don't win you won't be there long. Just seems to be the trend more so than ever before? Ya think?

HUH? Men it's the NWD in the Winchester/Fred Co. area of Virginia. It's not football in the Tidewater area or something like that. Stop assuming that these coaches were fired due to lack of wins.

Re: The increasing pressure to be successful.

Excellent point, aw.

High school baseball coaches, very rarely, get canned because of Ws and Ls. Now they might get a bit discouraged and cave a bit when they have some selfish players that won't follow the best plan possible to winning or at least to get better. In some ways, both Mounts and Simmons were victims of this in recent years.

Jared probably was held in the highest regard by both his fellow teachers in the FCPS system and his peers in the NWD. He played for Martin many years ago and he was a teammate of Simmons in high school. I know Burke likes him and Coach Taylor gets along with everyone. I am sure all four of these guys had his back, if that meant anything (perhaps it does not and I will be accused of going off the path of subject).

There are other things that sway coaches away. It's not always about what happens on the diamond. Jared recently remarried and perhaps he wants to spend more time with family. Eddie did the best he could, but the Judges have hit a cycle the last few years that has left them without a cupboard full of baseball talent. Yes, they have had a handful of good players but have not been real deep. Six wins over the last two years is one avenue of proof. Perhaps Simmons, who took Handley to the region championship and a state final appearance in his first season of 2002, tired of coaching and wanted a break. He is still young (40) and might just get back in it some day.

Yes, we have lost some good basketball coaches recently. And, some very good baseball men as well.

@21 Base - Thanks for some common sense comments

Re: The increasing pressure to be successful.

Are you kidding me!? Where in the heck in my post does it say " that I assume that coaches are being fired"? You tell me AW? because I don't see it anywhere. I have been in this area for almost 50 years, and Frederick Winchester doesn't fire coaches for not winning. If they did, James Wood Football would have went through many more coaches in the 90's and early 2000's than they did. If you think that every coach that has " left " their position over the last few months hasn't felt the pressure of winning , than you are kidding yourself. These coaches certainly don't do these jobs for the money, because they don't make much. They do it because they want to be successful and win. they love the game. When they are not successful at it , they leave for many various reasons. You can believe that they are always leaving for the reason they give, But I know better. I am not saying these coaches that are leaving are bad people, or bad coaches, or anything. Some very good and certainly nice guys! I am just saying that the pressure to win games, and have a successful program is greater than it used to be, and not only do they want to win themself, they don't want to hear about how bad the program has gotten or whatever. It's easier to walk away.

Please explain to me why the comment above that YOU made doesn't assume that if you don't win you want have a job? Maybe I can't read or comprehend

What it means is exactly what I continued to say on. If you don't create a winning program, one way or another. You will Be gone eventually. Through , quiting, relocation, going back to school, wanting to spend more time with family. Whatever the reason. All these coaches want to win almost as bad as the players. I'm just saying winning is a bigger part of the reason for leaving than what is said for the reason in some cases. I wasn't saying coaches were fired, because I know that. Even if that was the case, they wouldn't do that. They would just ask them to step down. Resign the position. AW, you don't think that some of these coaches didn't step down because the program wasn't heading in the right direction?

@ham - I get what you are saying now. Just didn't come out right in the beginning
