Homecoming is always memorable… The Homecoming Court, the excitement, the game but tonight, Homecoming 2014 will be memorable for the way it ended. The game for much of the night was a defensive fight. The first half was just that as neither offense got much going. Both teams relied predominantly on the run game as hard rain fell in the first half not only limiting the offense but also limiting this writers ability to take notes. The Hawks however got on the board with a field goal of 20 yards by Marshall Flippin in the second quarter and that is how it was at halftime, the Hawks who had lost two straight were up 3-0 over a Henrico team that was 5-0.

With the rain subsiding, the second half showed a bit more offense and more defense. Defense such as Tabb Patrick blocking a punt after the Warriors were unable to overcome a holding call on their first possession of the second half. Or perhaps it was defense such as Kevonte Demery recovering a loose ball after Brooks Coombs fumbled on first down with the Hawks driving.

The Warriors seemed as though they would score in the third quarter. They started from their own 27 and faced a 3rd & 20 after two penalties but it did not seem to matter as Taylor hit Kobe Chavis with a huge 48-yard pass. Chavis came through again on third down with a 23-yard run and the Warriors were now knocking at the door from the 10 yard line. That would be as close as they got. Penalties plagued the Warriors and on a third down pass, the pass was nearly intercepted by Zach Winston. Winston did come up with a big play on fourth down when Taylor put the ball in the endzone and Winston along with other Hawks knocked down the pass.

The two teams battled just as they had all night on defense for the remainder of the third and then fourth quarters but it was in the closing minutes of the game that things got a little interesting. Henrico had the ball at their own 10 yard line and behind a few running plays and a big 37-yard run from Chavis, the Warriors were now sitting pretty at the Hawk 10-yard line. Penalty flags were a flying. The first flag came out against Henrico for holding, pushing them back to the 22-yard line. On the next play Hanover was called for two penalties and the Warriors got the ball at the six yard line. On third down, the Hawks only needed another big defensive play and the Warriors would have no choice but to kick a field goal… it wouldn't come to that. Instead Taylor put the ball in the endzone and Kadoffi Wright caught it in the endzone for the Warriors first and only score of the night.

Hanover got the ball back with less than a minute to go but they would need to get a deep ball downfield and anyone who has seen the Hawks play this season knows the strength of their of their offense is in the run game. The Hawks could not pull off a deep pass and the game came to an end with the Warriors on top 7-3 after trailing for pretty much the entire second half and the Hawks losing a game they had won with twenty seconds to go.

AFTERTHOUGHTS
After an impressive start, the past two weeks have shown that the Warriors are beatable. Will be interesting to see how the rest of their season goes.

Both defenses are the strength of these two teams.

I might be alone in this thought but it sure would be nice to have speakers on all visitor's side stands.
