I'm in total agreement that the state semifinal change stinks to the high heavens. I don't recall this even being an issue and I'm guessing the executive committee must have met last week and made the change?

I'm in agreement with you, but for a perhaps somewhat different reason. If, as the VHSL claims, it was their intent for the higher seed for football to host all along, it is really poor business practices to wait until this late in the season to make it known. If they are winging it, and changing their rule for some other reason, then shame on them.

I personally prefer to see the higher seeded team host. I think it's a better choice. But what I like better is for the VHSL to perform with more professionalism.

Good luck with that desire for VHSL professionalism. Changing who hosts state semis mid-season is about as amateur as it gets!

I don't see how it could've been their intent for it to be that way when for weeks on end it was B at A in all classifications. Not arguing with you, just pointing out what was "fact" since before the start of the season.

I agree with you NND. That's just the rational they reportedly stated when they issued their "clarification".

I'm not defending them, but honestly, I think this is the way they intended all along, (power points prevailing), and they just dropped the ball when they published the original information. I believe it slipped through the cracks until someone asked a question, and they said, "oh crap, that's not what we intended"!

It would have gone against a long standing tradition, with respect to football, to not let the power points leader host.

We in Region B stand a chance of benefiting from this, but everybody I've talked to was disappointed in the way it was handled by the VHSL. If I had been in Regions A or C, I would have been awfully upset. Of course, A and C still have the chance to host, which under the original decision, B & D did not. So in the big picture, it's a fair decision. Just the way it was handled gives it a bad taste.

Incidentally, it's a double edge sword for the schools that ultimately do host. Naturally, everyone wants the home field advantage. And of course, the fans love it. But, it's a pile of work for the hosting school, for absolutely no financial gain. You get expenses, that is all. And, I guess whomever benefits from the profits at the concession stand gets a little bit of a boost. I will add this, it's a lot of labor, but it's a labor of love for most that are involved.

Let me preface this remark by saying I occasionally have a faulty memory, but wasn't it traditional to have B at A one year and flip it the next year back when it was strictly Group A and later when they broke things into divisions? I recall a 5-5 KW team from Region A hosting A 10-0 Gretna team from Region B in 2007.

I concur. It rotated. And thats what was in the rules this year, or so I thought. I read the VHSL handbook every year, and I am pretty sure I read A would play B, C would play D, and B and D would travel. But I am getting old lol

After reading thru several minutes from meetings, it appears the regions had until Oct 1 to finalize the format. If that's the case, then I guess we cant say they changed it. From what I read it just seems like the change from the previous format back to "regions" took up most of their time and they just never got around to approving a format.

It seems to be quite the mess which could have easily been avoided by the VHSL. I have no problem at all with the higher points hosting if that was the pronounced playoff criteria from the beginning.

How could the VHSL make these major alignment and playoff changes and release info to the public before completion and then forget about the final major details involving Virginia football?

Football is by far their most visible and popular sport. Not too mention it is their the most profitable one for their organization (I would assume).

For the last few years, the State Semis were hosted by the school with the higher power points rating, correct?

This year the intent was to change the region format back to the 4 region format and it was.

So someone had to change the State Semis hosting format this year as well, correct?

It was CHANGED for this season to Region A hosts Region B and Region C hosts Region D. Next season Regions B and D would host and so on. Also, I believe that I read that the regions would all rotate in a predetermined rotating manner.

So the original new intent was changed back to last season's hosting format (the old intent). So the original intent went back to the old ways of rotating but...this is getting confusing lol.
