Giles took advantage of some breaks and didn't give up the long pass. Could have had two more interceptions in the game and receiver dropped one long pass that might have been 6. The game turned with Biedelman made the long return on the missed FG early in the game. Both teams made mistakes but Giles capitalized on more than Glenvar did. Good game!
Giles did not come out throwing like all the VA Preps keyboard coaches were calling for, but did show some different formations and took advantage when the opportunity was there. Defense played pretty solid. Did a lot of the little things right tonight. Good win for the Mighty Spartans.
I am glad they didn't come out throwing. Based on previous games, I was more concerned about the defense, but the Spartans rose to the challenge against a very good Glenvar O. That hard work is what it's going to take to win state. Keep it up!
Obviously, you weren’t there and don’t know what you are talking about. We lined up in several different formations (spread).and also changed some blocking schemes etc.......we did attempt some passes and it got Glenvar on their heels, coaches did a great job mixing it up, not to mention we had the best athlete on the field on our side who can make plays scrambling from a spread or single wing or whatever formation you put him in! No one was calling for throwing every down, but saying mix it up with different runs and some passing and not the same 4 plays we always run! Both offense and defense did a great job last night and most complete game we’ve played all year. If we can continue doing the things we did last night on both sides it is hopefully to make a deep run in playoffs.
You passed two times . Doesn't matter the formation. Pounded the rock. Glenvar was tired my peeps said. You pass much you lose. See glenvar last night. Again this year only bburg in area has athletes to do your desire. Wake up. The recipe for Giles success is simple. Go to sleep and you be soft as charmin tissue. Giles fans the great ones better be thankful of their coaching through years. Why? You win way more then you lose!

Giles had two 3 and outs in the first two possessions. After that I noticed they seem to spread out more on the O-line and receivers which seemed to have created more space for the running game. Giles has always been very tight in their O-line in the past, haven't they? Another thing I noticed was that Giles has always been very deliberate, disciplined, and predictable in their plays. Last night they allowed #2 to get creative and do more "play action" running.
I'd like to say congrats to Giles coaches players and fans. You came to play! I was proud of both programs last night. What I saw was respect on both sides of the ball. You know when my family came to SW Virginia in 92 there were 2 names that stood out above the rest Salem and Giles. That hasn't changed in 25 years.Only in the last 3 or 4th years has Glenvar made this a rivalry game. I am a die hard Glenvar fan. My son played on 06 team that so very good. I think Giles went on win state against Manassas Park. My point of course is that for 20 + years Giles has consistently been in the hunt for Championships. There coaches players and fans have set the bar high and with the exception of a couple seasons during the coaching transition with Ragsdale and Williams they have been the team to beat. I think we have all benefited from that high standard. I know Glenvar has! As to the game last night Glenvar had their chances. They left 10 to 17 points on the field in the first quarter. Two drives to the red zone running the rock and then play callers became impatient and start throwing the ball around. Mix in a high snap and penalties and there you go.The blocked field goal and Ryan Beidleman changed old MO and the rest is history.I will say Beidleman an Leonard did there jobs one with 165 yards and the latter with 161 just awesome.But when you throw 40 times you lose 99 percent of the time!!! I think the game was a break or two closer than the score. Glenvars last possession ended was a tip tip interception in end zone. Too late at that point! No sour grapes here. We got beat and I think outcoached by a really good ball club .At the end of the game all the coaches players took a knee together at midfield. RESPECT Hope everyone came back healthy. Looks like we might get to do this again!! SORRY for the novel. But I see so often fans coaches and players let emotions get away from them. Not here. Thank you Giles family for setting the bar high and being consistanly one of the best. To the fans at Giles you are inspiration with your community efforts raising funds for young men with health issues. You did that for Glenvar player All's and your involved in doing it again. I recall a game in 2014 1st round playoff where Glenvar passed more than last night and they beat a very good Giles team 35-0. I would say that is how you beat Giles then and since..a balance with both passing and running. Hard to beat a great running team like Giles by just running the ball. The problem with Glenvar's passing last night is that is just wasn't in sync like it has been. Probably will be there next time..
I don't recall them throwing that much in the 2014 playoff game. They did hit a couple long TD bombs for a couple quick stike scores, but I don't think they threw as much over all as last night. Your QB was pretty much on tarket last night with the short passses, but off all night on the longer ones. Got to give the Clifford kid credit, he's a smart receiver, he came back off of route to make a target when nothing was there to make several catches. But Giles, although young on defense, does have some athletes with some speed, and was pretty good coverage on the long patterns.
Glenvar plays best with a 50/50 balance of pass, run and keeping defenses guessing. They did well with that on the first two possessions and marched right down the field into the red zone but couldn't finish. After that long missed field goal return and the Giles first TD, our passing game wasn't there anymore for the most part and I don't think Giles changed anything on defense. We just weren't executing like I know we can. Our running game was good as good as advertised, but not enough.
No we haven't thrown 40 times in forever! I coached in the rec program for Glenver against Salem for 20 years.The best way to beat a really good team is ball control. Keep the ball for a quarter at a time and keep the the opposing team offense off the field. Hard to score when u don't have ball. I thought that was the plan last night during the first two drives but PATIENCE or lack of it has it's price. We're on the 2 second and goal. We score there it would have been different game! Glenvar has played so consistently all year and they were due some mistakes u just hope it's not against a quality opponent.

Never said Glenvar should throw the ball 40 times. A 50/50 balanced attack means that 50% of your yards come from the pass and 50% of your yards come from the run. If you get 1/2 of your yards from many screens or a couple of long pass plays, it keeps the defense honest, which allows you to be in control with a good run game. I know of many great all running teams (Salem until 1996, LB 2015) or all passing teams (Eastmont 2010) that couldn't win a championship. I saw the same transformation at Glenvar in 2014 that I saw at Salem.with using the pass enough to take pressure off the running game. The upside is that the great running backs don't get injured nearly as much and a passing team can come from behind or win close games in the 4th quarter. The downside is that occasionally a passing team has an off night as i observed last night .

A 50/50 attack means you run the same amount has you pass it. Not same amount of yards. In high school football I don't think needs to be the case I think you just need to be a threat to do both.
I think that 21 to 9 first down stat may be a little misleading into how the game played out. I would guess over half of those Glenvar first downs came on their final 2 possessions when Giles took a 3 score lead with 8 minutes to play. I don't think Giles went into a full prevent as Glenvar went into their 2 minute hurry up no huddle offense, but they were content with the short passes and trying to tackle in bounds.
While I know Giles will win big like always. When they physical and run ball. I will agree having threat to throw never hurts. That being said weather turns cold. Big games! You had better be able to run ball. My post was still more of this. Why in world would your coach break out stuff against JR, Rad, Floyd or Carroll? Didn't need to. He ran ball Friday. He apparently had other stuff awaiting. Some you guys seem to have been on the panic 101 class. Again my peeps said Glenvar was wore out in 2nd half. Why? Giles ran ball well against darn good defense. Kudos to great tradition called Giles. Heck im in 70's. Finally got bruins back to winning. Not sure I like them better then Indians of 80's. Just me. Glenvar and Giles play way I'm use to. Crash and bang baby!
I like what you say Spring Road. I like crash and bang too but Glenvar's strength is a balanced attack .. I said before the game that if Glenvar passes well along with a good run game, advantage Glenvar but it was a little off.
No panic 101 here as I have faith that if we play you again our passing game will be much better. Great game,and the best part of it for me was seeing our guys respond well to adversity and play their butts off to the end. Just wish they would have started a little earlier. Giles game plan was solid as always.
