How is your school handling....

Most schools have adopted plans that allow students/parents to choose between in school learning or 100% online. VHSL has not taken a stance on this, but should students who select online lear9be allowed to participate in any sport that should have a season? It is a school decision. I've heard of some allowing participation and other's that are saying that if the family is too worried about the student being in school a few days a week, how can they justify 5 days of practice and games?

How is your school or schools in your area handling this?

One day at a time!

I live in Fairfax and have not yet heard the results of the parent survey with regard to this, but in Loudon 50.55% voted for 2 days in house and 3 days on line-which means 49.45% voted for all on line. Fairfax's plan is the same, I believe. Far from a convincing majority and there are going to be issues. As to your question, this is an unprecedented time so who knows. I absolutely understand and agree with you-if it is not safe to be in school it is not really safe to be on the field either (yes, I know they are not exactly the same but the basic principles of mask wearing and social distancing apply in either scenario). But I think we will see 100% on line students clamoring to play.

I believe Salem will have students in school 1 day a week with online the rest of the week. Students are staggered as to the day they attend to limit the number of people in the building each day.

Hanover plan that was approved last week is for 100% in-person for students who choose that. There is also a 100% virtual option.
Wow, thank you. I thought I read it was 100% virtual! Damn I really missed that one. Good for them!

No clue how people think schools will stay open. They'll be full online by mid-September. This thing is here to stay until we get a vaccine. Spain eased up restrictions and they've shot back up, tripling their rate over the past three weeks. Australia nearly had it eliminated and they've got an outbreak. And those are countries who actively worked together for months to eliminate the virus, to say nothing of the US right now, which is a disaster area.

The only good news I can impart is that the Oxford phase two research is excellent. The vaccine produces both antibodies and T-Cells (particularly the CD8+ cells) which means that part of it works i.e. the vaccine does what it should do, although we do not yet know if it successfully fights the virus yet, we'll find that out in phase three trials. Also, as importantly, it's SAFE. The side-effects associated with it in this trial (1,077 participants) were the usual flu vaccine side-effects such as fever, headache, muscle pain and all can be safely treated with a couple Tylenol, literally nothing serious beyond those, although this is also something they look for in phase three. Now in phase three they will test the large-scale efficacy and really look at if it's going to work fighting the virus and how long antibodies will remain, we may be getting boosters of this until/if a long-term solution is found or this could also be a two-and-done (this particular vaccine will be a shot and then a booster a month later). If we're lucky and this one is good to go then we can see good things come by year's end or Q1 2021 because many governments have been pumping billions into ramping up production for this thing, the assembly lines are waiting for the green light.

I really do think we're on the verge of great news with this thing (the phase two news above is extremely good, can't undersell it) but I do think sacrifices will continue to need to be made until then and that may be another 6-8 months.

Here's the Oxford vaccine research in The Lancet https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31604-4/fulltext#seccestitle10

Remember back when it was "two weeks to flatten the curve"? And then "OMG, such a high death rate". And then "OMG so many new cases guise".. and now this "OMG guise we must wait until a vaccine". I called this back in March and this same clown called me a conspiracy theorist. I think you and your fellow karens should volunteer yourself for the testing on this instead of allowing poor africans or central americans to be the "lab rats" this time around.

And yea, go ahead and go cry to the admins again.
Didn’t know it was a racial virus, new stuff comes out everyday!!! Smh

Unfortunately those are the groups that get targeted when it comes time for trial runs. My wife is from deep southern Mexico and we've been monitoring the actions of the local and state governments in that area. When this whole thing first started the regional mayor or whatever you want to call them had told the locals to destroy their crops. These people already have nothing, and then for no reason destroy the little bit they did have. I know this because my wife was able to get a call through to her mother. I was furious. Sadly these people have the education of a third grader in most cases so they have no idea what the risks are, and that is why these are the types of folks targeted for tests...for a freaking virus with a 99% chance of survival. Unless you die in a motorcycle accident like the person in Florida did the other day.. and still got counted as a CV death.

I’ve seen a lot of uproar in Hanover for allowing students the option to come back to school. My thing is a lot of parents don’t have the privilege of staying home or sending their child to day care. I hate to hear educators say “we’re not babysitters”.. We’re not but we’re also more than babysitters. In a lot of avenues, we’re all that a lot of students have and those are cold hard facts. I have no problem going back and being there for the students. That’s what we signed up for at the end of the day, I know I did. You risk just as much going to Wal Mart or the grocery store as you do having students. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that then you more than welcome to opt out of coming into the school. I feel like a choice should at least be given though.

@iDidntGetBanned @ClarkeFan83 Well guys, it's been a pleasure chatting with you on here. I got yet another warning for my posts, this time about the one in response to the chokie fan yet again. Not sure what I said that was so wrong, other than standing up to him. Whatever. Once this account gets locked I'll be moving on from this site for good.

Let's try to steer clear of politics and religion. Too divisive.

I have heard that the VHSL is considering option 3, but that may cause overlaps due to playoffs and such, hurting the smaller schools where more athletes play more than one sport. How bout you just don't have playoffs and championship games/matches? Regular season only. Whoever has the most District points or region points wins the district, region, or whatever champion label it is. This way, the multi-sport kids still get to participate in all the sports they normally do. Granted, no playoffs or championship games hurt the VHSL coffers, but isn't it ultimately about the kids anyway?

This is the most sensible solution I’ve seen. This is Highland Springs Head Coach Loren Johnson.
