Well, it's going to go down like this. GW is going to travel and beat Sussex by 2 td's. They are to big, fast and if you stop the run. They simply wip out the gun. You want be able to stop both, so pick your posion. Then there is Galax-Riverheads. Galax want be the most talented team or athletic team on the field. What they will be is, the best coached, the most fundamental team. They don't make mistakes when it comes to blocking. Hell, Dixon could stick me back there and I would get 5 yards a carry. Where they are weak at is the pass defense. If heads can throw the ball, they may have a chance to pull the upset. This game will come down to the kicker and we all know Galax has a kicker. Riverheads, if you come to Galax running that same old offense. Just shake hands after you get off the bus and go home as clean as you came. I have GW beating Galax in Salem.

You are funny ! Get out the Round Ball at the Fort ! I was told the only way you beat Galax was their bus broke down and they did not make the field till the 3rd quarter . Look what happened when they did not travel . Galax & Riverheads in a different league !

Lets just annoint GW as the GOAT! GW will win if they line up and run right at Sussex, If they run the jet and pass it will not be a good day for the offense. Plus The sped of sussex on offense will present some problems for he boys at GW. My thoughts .......gw 28 -20 if they run at them Sussex 28-6 if they try to throw and run the jet.

I agree with Fort, I want to pick RH so bad, but lining up in such a predictable offense against a well coached team could spell disaster. I have GW winning by 2 possessions (10-14 points). I believe they win the war in the trenches and just take Sussex's will away. I will say, if Sussex is able to get the lead earlier and force GW into some passing situations, I wouldn't be surprised to see their athletes shine and maybe pick a few passes off. But, if GW gets just a little bit of a lead, they can just run power/zone all night behind the hogs.

GW:28
Sussex:14
With GW scoring a late TD

Galax:21
RH:17

I think in a previous post I picked RH to win! LOL.

Across you might just be in round ball after this week Galax will be the most fundamental sound team you seen this year Dixon is good for a TD or two so I'm going to say Galax 24 Rh 15 Sussex 21 gw 35

Dixon is running a program at Galax. Most schools have a team and they practice together. He can take an okay team and make them a great team. He ran 3 plays against GW and they worked all night. He will find a weakness and pound on it. FC had success throwing the football against them. If riverheads shows up with that rec ball offense they ran last year. You will not win. Bring the basketballs with you, Galax has a nice gym.

It's GW, Galax, Sussex and then RH. That's how the league goes. You simply get to watch a good team play in Galax. I will be there on Saturday and wait for your excuses on Sunday. Enjoy real football. M.E.D still, which I might add. GW will be coming next year.

Win or lose on Saturday, Riverheads and that so called "rec league offense" has won not only it's share of games and championships for Riverheads but plenty of other schools as well throughout the years. They run it very well and it fits the style of athletes they have. I don't think you could line them up in a spread offense or even a pro style offense and have the success that they've had throughout the years. It works for them and I enjoy watching them run it. Same as Giles with the single wing. Also would love to see Staunton River in person run their single wing while averaging over 50 points a game.

You gotta mix it up, keep teams honest. Teams will make you beat them with the pass. If you can't do that, it will be a long day. Ask PM, a lot of teams don't pass because they feel like they don't have to. But when the time comes to where they have to, well they haven't had to all year and it shows. A lot of coaches don't develop a passing game and it hurts them some where down the road.

Riverheads will pass if need be. Definitely won't argue the part about passing in general though.

that rec league offense got stopped by a very good spurlin kid, he was a beast and he was in on every play, we will still run that rec league offense and see if they can stop it without having the spurlin guy, we have been running it for as long as casto has been there 20 years and it has given him 195 wins, so we will see if they can stop it again, but the team is bigger and stronger up front than last year, so may the best team win GO BIG RED

Galax is good and has a great coach who has proven he can win the big games but I'm here to tell you that Riverheads is really good. If anyone beats them in 1A, it will be an upset in my opinion. They do what they do very well. I know Dixon knows what he is doing but I will be surprised if Galax stays within 3 scores. I'm not trying to put down Galax because I really like what they have done over the past 7 years or so, just trying to say how good Riverheads is. Galax played a heck of a game last year to beat Riverheads and it surprised everyone that wasn't a Galax fan. It could happen again, but I doubt it will.

First play of the game. Run your TE straight down the field and hit him for a TD. Who pays any attention to the TE. Galax will be loading the box to stop the run. Play action pass, which no one in 1A runs anyway will work. I guarantee it.

Looking forward to this game, I love to watch two smash mouth teams go at it. Remember this, the team that throws the ball better will win.

I have been saying that a lot he is 6/4 and 230 but they don't do that, he has great hands and they would not be expecting it and he would be wide open so maybe that will be there trick play

I hope u are right, but if they win it wont be by 3 scores, both teams are playing well, u don't get to final 4 not having a good team, both teams have excellent coaches, and do what they do well run run run and run, so will prob come down to who can out coach the other, GO BIG RED

I say 3 points or less. Going to be a good game. In the playoffs, do what they don't expect. They practice against what they do except.

That rec ball offense has 183 wins and 3 state championships since 1999. That rec ball offense lost to a very good Galax team 7-6 last year in the state championship. That rec ball offense also has several state championship records in the VHSL Book of Records. That rec ball offense also has to many 1000 yard rushers for me to count on here. I enjoy reading about football on here but I hate stupid comments

I see some validity on both points.

Yes you can argue the success that Casto has had, but can we equate ALL of that success with his Offense? No. He has taken the field with better players more than likely 90% of the time. Yes, he has definitely beaten some teams that were bigger, faster, and stronger BECAUSE of his Offense, but I would suggest that is few and far between. Last year in the Championship game, RH rushed the ball 40 times and passed it 4. After the game Casto commented "They were stuffing us. They were stuffing the line of scrimmage and flying to the ball. They had a great defensive game plan." I don't know about "great defensive game plan". You rushed the ball 10x the amount you passed it, odds were indicating that you were going to rush the ball 90% of the time. Stacking the box is just adapting to a coach who refuses to do anything different. As a player, wouldn't you look to your leader to try something different if it isn't working? I mean you rushed the ball 40 times for 147 yards, you had 3 completions for 75 yards, obviously you had success throwing the ball when you had 34% of your offensive yardage on 10% of your offensive snaps. Why did he refuse to adapt? Not only did he not adapt, he refused to adapt after there was AMPLE success throwing the football. That's just being hard-headed.

Congrats to Coach Casto on his multiple victories, 3 state titles, and 1,000 yard rushers, but if you can't see that balance wins in this day and age, then you are simply out dated. Let us also not equate ALL of the success under Coach Casto to his offense, lets look at his player's abilities and the teams he's faced abilities as well.

We can equate all of that success to a good solid program year in and year out with good coaches and good athletes. My point is it is not a rec league offense as it was referred to. He runs a few plays and runs them to perfection. I personally love a pass once in a while and it does happen and it does work but he prefers to run run run.

Correct and his preference to "run run run" has gotten him beat, notably last year in the State Title game against Galax.

You have to have someone who can throw the ball and someone to catch it ! Last year that was a toss up . This year not so much !!! Red Team Will Be Ready !

You're right, in all the years Casto has coached, you have never had one player that has the ability to throw or catch.:rolleyes:

Casto will throw more this time and will have a couple of special plays to use in the right situation.( reverse, halfback pass etc.He knows Dickson's line play is awesome .

Why develop a QB if he's not allowed to be a QB. I'm sure at RH as well as Giles, there have been talented kids that could've been good QB's. Most kids would be like, why put the time in to it, if I'm not going to be used in that position. I would rather run the ball. Not saying you have to run the spread or anything but throw it 10 times a game weather you need to or not. That keeps teams honest and they want load the box. Either way, it is what it is. It's got you this far and it may carry you to Salem again. Good luck, I look forward to watching this game.

Dixon is a great coach, but if the game comes down to coaching, Riverheads wins. If you've seen film on Riverheads, they look real predictable, but that's because they haven't had to do anything special to win. If you can't stop what Casto is giving you, he's just going to keep giving you more until you do. I assure you, he'll have something Galax hasn't seen yet.

I think it came down to coaching last year and Galax won. Two very good coach's but they need good players to carry out their game plans. I'm sure their is good players on both teams but the loss of Spurlin will hurt Galax in trying to shut Riverheads down. Hopefully Galax will play as a team and have a couple of guys show up and take up the slack of Spurlin being gone. Safe travels, may the better team win and both come away injury free.
