Offensive player goes up for jumper in paint and comes down wrong on ankle. Defense gets rebound and fast breaks. The ball and most players are 20 feet away from the injured player. The official blows whistle to stop play for injured player. In the past I've seen games where play doesn't stop until the injured players team regains possesion. Whats the right call. BTW, the player left briefly but did return and was able to play.

The ref. should have waited until a fast break was over or a dead ball or break where you would not take a score away. It is hard not to blow the whistle and stop play, but then some of these kids are great actors.
If the coach does not come onto the floor to help the player, no time out need to be taken for the player to stay in the game.

As bowlingref said, if the opponent has the ball and the player is in no further danger of injury, the trailing official should remain near the player and wait until the opposing team pulls the ball out and is no longer attempting to score, until a shot is taken, or until the ball becomes dead.

To clarify, once the coach or trainer is beckoned by an official, the player must be replaced or a timeout used to keep him in the game, even if no one comes out to aid the player. (NFHS 3-3-5)
