Galax Stats.....
Last year, Galax finished 6-4 in the regular season and won the state title.
In the 10 regular season games, that team averaged giving up 22 points per game on defense, and averaged 41 pts per game on offense. They outscored their opponents with a 6-4 record by a total of 190 pts.
This year in 2016 for Galax. They finished with an 8-2 record with losses to powerhouse Graham and a rival game in which Galax with hammered with injuries to Fort Chiswell.
In the 10 regular season games this year, the team has averaged giving up on only 12 points per game on defense. On offense for this year, they are averaged 37 pts per game. There margin of victory on average is 250 pts.
Conclusion for Galax: Statistically speaking.....Galax is actually, BETTER than last year. their margin of victory is better. The record is better. The offense is 4 points per game worse than 2015, but their defense is an alarming 10 pts better per game than last year. Again, statistically speaking, they are MUCH better than last year. Now, on the field and by the eyeball test is another thing that is subjective and I can not speak to that. I am just giving you numbers from the past two years which are facts. They show Galax being much better statistically overall.
Riverheads Stats-
Last Year in 2015, averaged 45 pts per game on offense in the regular season going 10-0. They gave up 12 pts per game last year (11.9 to be exact). Their margin of victory was a whopping 330 points compared to Galax's margin of victory last year in regular season of 190 pts.
This year in 2016 for Riverheads. The overall record is 9-1 compared to 10-0 for last year with the only loss to Stuarts Draft. This year, Riverheads only gives up 11 pts per game (10.9 to be exact) which is 1 point better than last year. The offense is averaging 42.6 pts per game which is about 2.5 pts less per game than last year. The overall margin of victory for this year is 306 pts which is slightly less than the 330 points last year.
Conclusion for Riverheads. Offensively, they average about 2.5 pts per game less this year than last year. Defensively, they give up 1 less point per game (about 11 pts per game) compared to last year which was about 12 points per game. Their margin of victory this year is 306 pts, which is less than 2015's 330 pts. Statistically speaking, they are slightly not as good as last year. These are facts. Again, there is also the eyeball test and that is subjective and I can not speak to it. Those are opinions that could go on for days or months and nobody knows until the two teams meet, if in fact they do meet.
OVERALL CONCLUSION FROM ALL OF THE STATS ABOVE COMPARING 2015 AND 2016
Galax, at least on paper, is much more improved than last year. Riverheads, at least on paper, is slightly not as good, or decreased on paper compared to last year. Does the above mean that Galax is automatically crowned champions? Of course not. They may lose the first round by 30 pts or vice versa for Riverheads. We don't know, but at least statistically, you can see why the argument in favor of Galax winning another title and beating Riverheads again, if they do play, has some statistical-factual support. Again, paper and stats are one thing and on the field is another.
I am just telling you folks out East.......Galax is once again the real deal in 1A ball. Hurley, GW, and even Fort Chiswell, if they play again, is not going to beat them. They are also healthy again. and would have beat Fort Chiswell if healthy. As for the Graham loss, it did not matter.....healthy or not healthy, Graham was far better. I know Riverheads lost to Stuarts Draft in a nailbiter this year. I can tell you this, Graham and Galax was no nailbiter. Graham handled them, but again and with that written, I think Graham would easily handle Stuarts Draft if they played.
