It's been a long time since these Falcons have soared.

The Huguenot Falcons out of Richmond have really struggled for good while now. During the years that Coach McFee roamed the sidelines, you had better bring your "A" game. Most years, they didn't win too many games, but they showed up ready to play. In recent years, they get scheduled for a lot of homecoming games.

The Falcons did make the playoffs year before last, but they got there with a single win over hapless George Wythe. As the 16th seed, they paid a visit to Lafayete. That wasn't pretty.

Last year, they only had one victory again, over winless Wythe. But that was their final game of the year, so I'm sure there was some jubilation in the locker room after that game.

I'm not sure what it would take for their football fortunes to improve. Maybe just the right coach? Maybe they have the right coach, and he can get the community engaged? Like many old, inner-city schools, the challenges are many, and the solutions are difficult to find.

I personally have a great deal of respect for the kids that come out and stick with it at schools like Huguenot. To submit to the grueling two-a-days in the hot August heat, to prepare for a season against teams like LC Bird, Manchester, Monacan, Cosby, James River? It takes a lot of courage.

I was hoping that a couple of the Richmond guys might check in, even though most are with 5a of 6a teams. But they are on a lot of schedules in the Capitol city, (or RVA, as it has become the fashionable term to use).

How about you, Lafayette? I know you had them in the playoffs, as I mentioned above, and you have them on your out of district slate. Any comments?

Coach Jennings has done a good job with what he has. They are very similar to Petersburg. Some athletic talent at a few positions with little or no depth. Very typical of the Richmond City Schools.

I looked at their schedule and another 1 win season appears to be forthcoming. I agree with you DP. They face a top notch schedule and take a beating. Have to respect their no quit attitude.
